Find Your Own Experience

Why waste time on the material things when the adventure is awaiting you.

Find Your Own Experience
Elaina Smith

I recently found myself in a discussion with classmates about whether my pricey purchase of Adele tickets was worth it. All I could think to myself was what if I had passed it up? What if it came to the day of and I had serious regret about not going? I wouldn't have missed the other 25,000 screaming fans, but I would have missed one of my favorite singers ever, live and in person.

I think that the idea of the experience is something everyone should have on their mind. As we get older and see that the need for material things isn't there anymore, what do we ask for? The only thing we should have a desire for is the experiences life is trying to offer us. These experiences may cost you money and they may cost you time but the one thing the won't cost you is a regret. When you find the experience and you get the life high you've been searching for, you won't be able to describe that feeling to anyone but you can hold it close in your memories. An experience can be a concert or a 7-mile kayak trip down a river or a spontaneous trip, even to just the town over. Collecting mugs, magnets or tee-shirts will never give you the same lifetime joy as the memories created with great people in an incredible world.

I see that as I am getting older and the need to adventure and explore has taken over my thoughts, I want these experiences to last forever. I want to experience with friends, with my mom, with my dad, in different countries, down the road. I never want to loose the feelings deep within me, that push and drive me to my desires. I can attest that there is no better feeling than getting out of bed on Saturday morning at 8 a.m. after a cup of coffee and venturing out to do something amazing that day.

Giving up dreams shouldn't be in the cards for you yet. Take the class trip to the museum and see the exhibit that you don't think you'll like because when else will you be pushed out of your comfort zone. Try to get to a town nearby that sounds endearing and has charm that you know you will love. Save your money for that trip overseas or the concert of your dreams. Or even better, save for both. Don't let people put limitations on your experiences. An experience is yours and yours to own. Experiences come free and expensive, near and far, but most of all they come with the joy they bring to you and the smile that will spread across your face when you have done something amazing. Give the experience a try and let yourself explore.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
