Finals Week Expectations Vs. Reality

Nothing will go quite as planned.

Finals Week Expectations Vs. Reality

The last week of school use to be the most anticipated and worry-free week of the year. But then you came to college, and it became the most stressful, anxiety-filled and traumatic week of the year. You've been preparing all year for this week and you go into finals thinking you have it in the bag. You'll have plenty of time to bid farewell to your friends for the summer and kill your final exams...so you think.

1. How you'll spend your free time

Expectations:

You'll spend all your free time getting brunch with your friends and unwinding from your busy schedule. It's a time to celebrate the fact that you all survived another year and to say goodbye to your soul mates for the summer.

Reality:

2. Packing

Expectations:

Packing everything you've stuffed into your tiny dorm room shouldn't be that hard. How much could you have really fit in there all year? This will also give you a chance to get rid of some things that you haven't used in a while and know you won't need over the summer.

Reality:

Time to call TLC because when you're packing up your room, you'll realize what a hoarder you have become. You'll keep every paper you wrote all year and the notes you took in math, just in case you need to use your calculous skills when you're at home.

3. Studying for finals

Expectations:

Your study schedule will be planned out down to the minute to make sure you can get all your work done without having to sacrifice any plans you may have.

Reality:

It's 2 p.m. and you realize you haven't started your 10 page paper yet. You don't follow the schedule you made to get your studying done early because you get distracted by everything. The panic starts to kick in and you'll have a full-on meltdown in the library.

4. How you'll spend the final weekend of the year

Expectations:

The last weekend of the year will be spent going out with your friends one last time before you all go your separate ways for the summer. There's no way homework and studying can hold you back from enjoying this last night with everyone.

Reality:

With finals coming up in just days, the plans you made weeks in advance for the last weekend of school will be put on the back burner. Instead of going out, you'll spend the night at the library trying not to fall asleep on your textbooks.

5. Moving out of your apartment

Expectations:

You've spent an entire year being avoiding being in your old, tiny dorm room. The hall always smells and everything is dusty. All year you've been waiting to move out and upgrade to a nicer place to live. You'll be ecstatic to leave your dorm for the last time.

Reality:

Moving out will be a surprisingly emotional experience. You're entire life was inside the tiny, gross dorm room for the year and you're shocked to find that you will actually miss it this summer.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
