Searching for a roommate can be a daunting task. When considering that you will be choosing someone who will be sharing not only your living space, but also your breathing air, maybe your clothes, food, bathroom, closet space and more, you may come to realize what a huge decision selecting a roommate truly is. Choosing your first ever roommate, which often times is a roommate for the freshman dorms at college, is understandably nerve-wracking, scary, and downright stressful. The good news is, as time goes on and you have lived in more places, therefore chosen more roommates, the selection process becomes more routine than before. Whether you are in the process of finding your first-ever roommate for this upcoming school year or have already had fifteen roommates come and go over the years, here are five films for anyone to watch when searching for that special someone.
1. "The Roommate" (2011)
Let’s start the list out with the most undesirable genre of roommate: the psycho killer. This movie features two young, beautiful college roommates starting their time as students at the University of Southern California. Everything seems normal enough; they are both nice, attractive young adults and on the surface, and seem like the match would result in a great friendship. Despite the positive surface-level first impressions, one of the girls winds up being a psychotic, overprotective, dangerous individual who puts those around her, especially her roommate, in harms way. Try not to let this movie scare you too much, because it is highly unlikely to find someone of this nature without sensing something off. Anyhow, this film should teach the importance of considering more than just looks and other surface-level assumptions when selecting a roommate.
2. "Baby Mama" (2008)
This next film is a bit more up-lifting. In Baby Mama, a white trash surrogate mother and work-obsessed, overachieving business woman begin living in close quarters. Though these two women's lifestyles and personalities are on opposite ends of the spectrum, they work out their differences and manage to develop not only a liking for one another, but also to have some incredible times together. This movie should teach you that in selecting a roommate, sometimes finding someone who is extremely different from yourself may result in the best experience you can imagine.
3. "Step Brothers" (2008)
This film, which is about two grown men forced into step-brotherhood and sharing a room in their parents home, really shows what a great roommate relationship can entail. At first, the pair struggled to get along, but after working out their petty differences, they were destined to be best friends forever. The key thing to take from this film is that sometimes you do not get to pick the person of your dreams, but it does not mean that they will not become your best friend. Additionally, remember to avoid letting the small quarrels that may arise affect your friendship with a roommate, especially if your bond is as strong as Dale and Brennan’s.
4. "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory" (1971)
In this film, I want to focus on the roommates Grandpa Joe, Grandma Josephine, Grandpa George, and Grandma Georgina. These four characters not only share a room, but share a bed. Even so, they seem to be fairly content with their less-than-ideal living situation, even at times when Grandpa George is being cranky.
The truth is, even if you technically only select one roommate, you might wind up feeling like you have many, many more. From you inviting your best friends around to your roommate inviting her's, or from boyfriends or girlfriends coming around from time to time, a small space that you already share can soon become even more cramped. But, don’t let this necessarily be a bad thing. Look at the bright side, just as the four bed-sharing grandparents did in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and see it as an opportunity for expanding your friendship circle and creating even more fun memories.
5. "22 Jump Street" (2014)
This film displays a few varied examples of college roommates pairs, and can teach several lessons to support you in making a good roommate selection. It will teach you that choosing to room with your best friend may lead to some trouble. As you each begin your new college lives and find your places in the university's community, your schedules may involve one another less and less, potentially leading to tension and jealousy. The film also displays a situation expressing you should not necessarily try and be too nice in selecting a roommate, because that person may be even harder to deal with than originally anticipated. Watching this movie will help give you a few laughs along with several things to think about in roommate decision-making process.
Each of these movies gives you certain things to look out for, but many things to look forward to. Roommates are often an unavoidable part of living situations in your early adult years, so try not to stress yourself out too much in choosing an individual. Chances are, the people you are considering are just as nervous as you are. In the end, almost anything can work out between the people involved this unique type of relationship, as long as you and your roommate are reasonable and considerate towards one another.
