Have you ever imagined living in a different, fictional world? Maybe a world from a video game or movie? If you think like me, you would think that these fictional worlds can sometimes feel more inviting, or interesting, than our current world. I asked a few of my friends this question, and they all said different worlds from various movies or video games. None of them, however, stated the world I would live in. If I could choose to live in a fictional world of my choice, I would choose the world of the video game “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.”
This game takes place in the province of Skyrim, the northern province of the empire known as Tamriel. Taking place in an interesting unknown time, there is a mixture of sword fighting, adventuring, and even the completion of daily tasks, if necessary. Plus, there are dragons. "Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim" is an open world game, all in first person. You can explore as much as you want, fight what you want, and play how you want. Go duel with swords and show no mercy? You can play that way. Prefer to sneak around and avoid combat? You can play that way. The world itself is extremely diverse, with 10 different races all throughout the game. They span from the most common, The Nord (native to Skyrim), to a much more rare race, such as Khajiit (ka-sheet), which are literally walking cat people who talk. Sounds extremely odd to us in this world, but in Tamriel, it’s all normal. There are also elven races (3 different types), an orc race, a walking, talking reptilian race called the Argonians, and 4 types of human races.
Besides the people, there are many animals and creatures that roam the woods, mountains, swamps, and plains of Skyrim. They can span from a simple wolf, to trolls, to giants and sabercats, to massive spiders, and even werewolves every now and again. Did I mention there are dragons? There are at least 7-10 types of dragons (including the DLCs) that sit on the top of mountains and wait for you to come slay them. Or, every now and again, one will attack a town you’re in, or attack you on your travels.
Despite these terrors of dragons and giants, the vast and diverse world has different terrains, depending on the hold you are in (a hold is like a county or jurisdiction). There are 7 holds in all. The Reach is mostly plains, Falkreath is dense forest, Haafinheim is mountains and forest, The Pale and Winterhold is snow, East March, and the Rift, have swamps and forests. The people in these holds try their best to live an honest living. They are farmers, merchants, fishermen, blacksmiths, or the average guard. Did you know that most guards used to be an adventurer like you? But then they all took an arrow to the knee. You can trade with them, make friends, and help these people throughout Skyrim. Some people don’t make quite as honest of a living, being thieves or bandits. But they are the scum of the game, so they do not matter too much.
I would like to personally live in Skyrim, because it is set back in a simpler time, where people actually talked to one another. The landscape itself, for a videogame, none the less, is beautiful. Also, the diverse, open world makes every day more interesting than the last. Viking-like civilizations really peak my interest, so Skyrim really calls to me, being the world that it is with swords, magic, dragons, and everything else. Now that I have chosen where I would like to live, what fictional world would you like to live in?
