A few weeks back, there was a trend on Facebook where people would take three fictional characters that would best describe them. I saw several characters from your favorite cartoons all the way to your favorite movies. But unfortunately I didn’t participate in it. I don’t know, I guess it was because either I didn’t really feel like it or it was hard for me to narrow my personality down to three certain fictional characters. Then it hit me the other night. The three fictional characters that sum up my personality the most are Mickey from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," Max from "A Goofy Movie" and Shrek. I know some people might think “Derrick, these are some random ass characters you picked. Why them?” Well, I would normally say, “mind ya’ damn business," but I’m in a good mood today so I’ll tell why I’m like each of these characters.

  • Mikey
  • Max
  • Shrek

I used to love watching "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" growing up as kid. I remember getting up on Saturdays just so I could watch it. But even though I really liked all of the turtles, the turtle I identify with the most was Mikey. I know, I know, everyone wanted to be Raphael because he was the tough guy or Leonardo because he was the leader, but I wanted to be Mikey. Think about it! Mikey was the funniest one out of all of them. Mikey could be fighting like fifty-foot clan ninjas and still find time to make a joke. Even in his most dark times he still could find humor out of any situation. Plus, when it was time to get down to business when fighting the Shredder, Mikey was still about that action. Sounds just like me. You know, besides the whole fighting with nunchucks thing and being a turtle.

Okay, let me just say “A Goofy Movie” was one my favorite Disney movies of all time. Don’t ask why, it’s just everything about that movie was lit! But the character I relate to the most was Goofy’s son Max. Max was the laid back kid in high school who only really f$cked with a few friends, but was really an outgoing person behind closed doors. That’s me all the way. He even went as far as dancing on stage just to get his crush’s attention in front of everybody. Plus, did you see him kill that moonwalk though? Max was the best character in that movie to me.

Okay, look I know I’m not big, green and live in a damn swamp. But there are other ways where I’m like Shrek. Okay let’s examine this. Shrek was really a good person who wanted to get along with people, but since he was a monster, people were afraid and hated him which made him resent people and push them away. That’s why he kept to himself in the swamp. Now I’m not like that to the “extreme," but when I was younger I remember trying to impress people with my jokes. When people just saw it as me being “weird,” it made me want to just be by myself most of the time. But like Shrek I eventually out grew that stage, “sort of," so it's not that bad anymore. Shrek is definitely a character I felt the most sympathy for and could see myself in.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
