April 21, 2016 was a big day for SUNY Brockport students. Their student government, BSG, had announced an appearance from Fetty Wap as the college's spring concert about a month before, and the concert date was finally here. Students were beyond excited. The 300 guest tickets available sold out within the first day they went on sale and the day of the show, there were only 20 tickets left for sale.
The whole day, students prepared for his arrival. All over campus, his songs were being played full blast. It was the talk of the day and the main event that the rest of their schedule was based around. Club sports cancelled practices, students missed night classes, some even skipped dinner. The line built up way before the concert was prepared to start at 9:30 p.m. I personally stood in the front of line after arriving at 6:30 p.m.
When 8:30 p.m. rolled around, the time the doors were set to open, and the doors remained closed. Students stood in confusion staring at the doors. Eventually, after 10-20 minutes, the doors opened and students plowed inside. Students were trampled and shoved as everybody fought their way to the front. After a security check, we were set free into our Special Events Recreation Center's field house and left to fend for ourselves.
Fortunately, for me, my waiting had paid off, and I was front row in the right hand corner of the stage. It was the perfect place to watch the performance, of his opening acts. As promised, Cozz came out and performed alongside RGF Productions and DJ 1738. After his performance was well overdone, they brought out two more no-name performers and allowed them to perform. Two hours later, the crowd became restless. They kept bringing around iPhones taking videos for Snapchat and claimed they needed the crowd to 100 percent in order to bring out Fetty Wap.
They continually claimed Fetty Wap was in the back. They brought up 10 different girls from the crowd to dance to some DJ mixes, and while they were fabulous, they weren't what the crowd had came to see. RGF Productions brought up Monty, who was probably suppose to be a surprise guest, while trying to convince the crowd of angry college kids that Fetty would be appearing on stage. However, the security guards had leaked that Fetty was not appearing.
Around 12:00 a.m., after continuous stalling and lies, the DJ took to the stage and rudely apologized for Fetty Wap not appearing and claimed he was having bus issues.
Talk about thousands of angry college students.
BSG took to twitter around the same time that students were released from the area. "@bsgbuzz You will all be REFUNDED! Fetty Wap misinformed us on arrival time and has failed to meet the contract details. Tonights concert is canceled" This tweet clearly confirming that RGF Productions lied once again to the students about Fetty Wap's bus issues.
Brockport students took to social media complaining about the incident.
Yik Yak exploded, demanding refunds from BSG and threatening to riot.
"Fetty went down the list of my favorite rappers"
"BURN.IT.DOWN..... okay maybe not that bad but like tip over your local trash can"
"Everyone tweet @fettywap"
Angry students also took to twitter to tag Fetty Wap in their tweets and show their disappointment and anger toward the performer.
"@DevynCheriee Thank you @fettywap huge disappointment. #seventeenthirtylate"
"@OliviaKuter Fettys bus broke down aka deleting every @fettywap song off my phone"
"https://twitter.com/bcostolnick02/status/723369824..."- This tweet includes a video of angry students leaving the concert area.
"@sambuchimiranda @fettywap you can't be trusted"
Though, Fetty Wap's latest Instagram post, at the time, was 21 hours before the outburst, it also received a lot of hate and frustration.
"jts97 Way to show up to your own damn concert asshole"
"katiereilly33 Lost all respect from Brockport"
"@veronicadaleee Not gonna lie I was excited for @fettywap but you're a huge disappointment. You've been famous for a year and already blowing off shows????"
Around 3:00 a.m., he took to Instagram to apologize to Brockport about his absence.
"fettywap1738 Brockport NY … I don't move like that but I can't get right it I ain't right , I do apologize for not sayin anything in advance and I hope I can make it up to y'all … Zoovie" His statement was accompanied by this video: https://www.instagram.com/p/BEfjtqek11s/?taken-by=... in which he claimed he had "health issues" due to a motorcycle accident days before. In his caption, he states "I hope I can make it up to ya'll," however, in the video he says he can't.
Fetty Wap admitted to knowing in advance that he would not be attending the show.
Three different reasons that he was a no show told by RGF Productions and Fetty Wap.
Less than 24 hours later, Fetty Wap's video had been removed from Instagram.
Just one day after Fetty Wap had released his new single "Wake Up." It seems logical that any arising artist in the process of releasing new music would want to promote that music and make himself look better, but Fetty Wap proved to be illogical.
Even the bigger stars, such as Beyonce, show up to their shows or at least cancel before hand. The Queen B has been in the music industry for 20 years and has only ever postponed a show once in 2013 and did it with doctor's orders and a personalized hand written note.
Take notes, Fetty Wap. If you want to get to the top, it's better to do it respectfully and maturely, not by making your target age fans angry.
