Sometimes, like most young homo sapiens in the 21st century, I get sad, or not even. Sometimes I don't necessarily feel "sad" more, "Oh my goodness, there is literally anything else I'd rather be doing than walking to class right now haha. Please end my suffering."

Well, not to worry. The way you are currently feeling is completely natural! In today's busy world of political struggles, never-ending amounts of homework, financial turmoil, and undoubtedly other sources of stress and anxiety, it can be hard to relax and allow yourself to enjoy life. However, if you have a few minutes to spare in between running to class and injecting yourself with caffeine, I do have a few song suggestions to help you ease your way into a state of relaxation (or, at the very least, they might make ya smile).

1. "Raspberry Beret" by Prince

This song is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites. It's got a fun retro 70's vibe and features an enthusiastic Prince jamming out about a girl and her brightly colored hat.

2. "Brave" by Sara Bareilles

Accurately paired with a music video that features people from all walks of life busting a move in public, Sara's anthem to self-confidence is a bop that will make you want to get up and dance no matter where you are.

3. "Do It Well" by Jennifer Lopez

Packed with a punch of sass, Jenny from the Block will have you feeling fierce as you run to your class across campus that starts in 3 minutes.

4. "Burnin' Up" by the Jonas Brothers

A throwback to early 2000's Disney. This classic JoBro tune will fill you with some of that feel-good childhood nostalgia, and who could forget Big Rob's flawless cameo? (Which Jonas brother did you have a crush on? Personally, I always had a soft spot for Joe).

5. "Poker Face" by Lady Gaga

As a fan of Lady Gaga, it's been incredible to watch her career and style develop and expand over the years. Although my favorite album of hers is probably her most recent, "Jolene," I can't resist some of her classics.

6. "Brown Shoes" by the cast of "Sing Street"

This movie was released in 2016, and it has quickly become one of my favorite films of all time. It's a coming of age story about a band of teens growing up in Dublin in the 80's. The movie features both classic 80's tunes and originals such as "Brown Shoes" which is even better when you learn its context in the movie.

7. "With A Little Help From My Friends" by The Beatles

Anyone who knows me well enough won't be surprised to see a Beatles song appear on this list (and they shouldn't be- I saved the best for last!) To be fair, pretty much any song on this album is guaranteed to improve your day, but this one in particular just gets it so right. They even gave Ringo the lead on this one which is great.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Before that day, I never really thought about being a friend to myself, and at the time, I didn't really know what it meant. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
