I Feel Bad For Darth Maul (Part I)

The "Star Wars" prequel movies definitely have their fair share of flaws. There's no denying it. Watching all three films and writing down every mistake would be nothing short of a Herculean task. However, despite its shortcomings, I am of the opinion that this inferior trilogy still has strands of cinematic goodness woven into its disappointing fabric. Perhaps the best supporting evidence for the movies’ deserving some merit (aside from the legendary John Williams score) are the ideas for the characters. There are several characters that had ample potential to be interesting, but ended up being poorly executed and ultimately falling flat. One character in particular could have been the best of the entire three film run, if not for how horribly his almost non-existent story arc was handled.

The mysterious Sith from "Episode I" Darth Maul, vies for being my favorite part of any of the prequels, even with what very little dialogue and character development he was given. Maul, with his horned black and red head, yellow eyes, and double-bladed lightsaber, managed to steal the show every time he was on the screen. Those traits, unfortunately, also ended up being practically the only interesting things about his character. If only his awesome evil appearance had been coupled with a much more significant role to the overall saga. He had so much more to offer to Star Wars beyond biting the dust in the very same film he was introduced in! Darth Maul got totally duped.

So, in an effort to harness my sympathy for this would-be legend of a movie villain, I began to imagine the possibilities. For starters, would it really have been too extensive of an undertaking to have Maul survive "The Phantom Menace?" The rest of the movie plays out exactly the same, only during the climactic battle that originally proves to be his demise, some tweaking to the action allows Darth Maul to flee the scene as young Obi-Wan tends to a dying Qui-Gon Jinn.

My fantasy tribute to Maul didn’t stop at simply reincarnating him though. Once I had him alive again, I couldn’t help but to fully imagine his all-new legacy!

And I did. Unfortunately for you, Reader, it was long. I'll delve deep into all of the specifics next week. If you feel as bad for the jaded Maul as I do, you're going to want to join me then!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
