What is your greatest fear? Most people I know are afraid of spiders, reptiles, heights, usually common fears like those. Well I'm not afraid of any of these things. My fear is considered to be "unique" by most people.
I was asked by my English teacher if I could "do her a favor." This was a few weeks ago now, but my friends remind me of the "favor" every day. Mrs. S asked me to make a bulletin board. This board required the use of a... STAPLER!
My automatic thought was to run out of the room. However, in order to act as if my fear did not exist, and to maintain my status as a sane human being, I attempted to put a smile on my face.
Probably two and a half minutes after the question, my response actually came out of my mouth. I responded to the question Mrs. S had asked with, "I am sorry, I can not," as my face became more and more flushed.
Well aware that I had nothing else to do, my teacher looked at me with a puzzled look. I try to help anyone as often as I am able to, so this was a very odd response to come from me.
For that two and a half minute pause, I had pondered the idea of using the deadly object known as a stapler. Mrs. S probably thought I was a loony. Actually, she knows a lot about me already from school, so she probably thinks I'm more crazy than before.
I did end up following through with the favor. By that I mean I watched my friend use the stapler and jumped every time it hit the paper. At the end of the day, I did survive though.
The actual sight of a stapler doesn't bother me. Now THAT would be ridiculous for a high school senior to be afraid of. No disrespect if that's you, I'm sure I could tell you several ridiculous things I'm afraid to look at.
When you're a fourth grader, using a stapler as a tool is not that scary for most kids. You probably will grow up to be a normal human when it comes to stapler usage. In my case, I had been afraid of them for no specific reason. My fear became present before the event that ended all hope... of my stapler use.
The sharp shiny metal pieces that came out were just the start of what I thought would be my demise. After my friend decided to high five his own hand with our metal dispensing friend, that was the end of my stapling career. Not only were the staples stuck in his hand, they were images stuck inside my head.
So, here we are. I am about to graduate high school and I avoid using staplers because they terrify me. Don't worry though, my fear is fading as I practice stapler safety. It's almost as important as a "Drivers Ed" course. I will be able to staple my own papers within the next month... I have made this promise to myself for college.
