We manage to look fabulous on our way to work, class and lunch dates even though our rain gear is working over time. After we have fulfilled the day’s obligations we welcome the sight of a fluffy blanket and a comfy couch. This wet inconvenience gives us a viable excuse to go home, loaf around in our pj’s and get lost in our favorite movies. In the spirit of these back to school monsoons, I have taken the liberty of listing some of the greatest wet weather centered movies to curl up to. If you’re in the mood for a rainy romance, horror, comedy or action film, here is the list for you.
Forrest Gump (Drama, 1994)
Forrest claims "One day it started raining and it didn't quit for four months. We been through every kind of rain there is. Little bitty stingin' rain and big ol' fat rain. Rain that flew in sideways. And sometimes rain even seemed to come straight up from underneath. Shoot, it even rained at night." Are you sure you were in ‘Nam and not Charleston, Forrest?
Crazy, Stupid, Love. (Romantic Comedy, 2011)After Emma Stone publicly breaks up with her lawyer boyfriend she exits just like any well-mannered lady would- by chugging a glass of straight alcohol and fiercely strutting into the rain. She then manages to reenact Dirty Dancing with a shirtless Ryan Gosling while still soaking wet. Well-done, girl.
Poltergeist (Horror, 1982)The classic movie that made every 80’s child fear that they were going to get sucked into their bedroom closet peaks when a rainstorm reveals the reason why the angry ghost-kidnappers took the kid in the first place. If you missed this nugget of Spielberg cinematic gold no worries, a remake is rumored to premier in 2015. Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Romantic Drama, 1961)Audrey Hepburn frantically searches through the pouring rain for the two things that will ensure any woman's happiness- true love and a cat.
Jurassic Park (Action, Science Fiction, 1993)What is more terrifying than a dinosaur? A wet, angry dinosaur.
Singin' in the Rain (Musical, 1952)
Could we really make this list without Gene Kelly? You sir, have mastered the art of puddle jumping.
Spider-Man (Action, 2002)
Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire prove that the rain kiss is not just reserved for romance and comedy. However I still don't understand how the upside down technique works.
Say Anything... (Drama, Romance, 1989)
John Cusack is one man who loves himself a rainy movie scene. Also what makes heartbreak more depressing than being drenched and alone in a phone booth?
And Finally,
The Notebook (Romance, 2004)
We here in Charleston feel a personal connection to this film. The iconic dock scene contains the rain kiss to end all rain kisses. Ryan Gosling you’ve done it again. Boys take notes.
Check the forecast, grab some wine, check your roommate's dvd stash, and milk a rainy day for all it's worth.
