Horror
Blair Witch Project
1999
Blair Witch is a classic movie that created a path for other movies like Paranormal Activity, the Den, Creep, and many others. This film was independent, low budget, and absolutely groundbreaking. The each scene leaves you wondering what's going to happen next and the authenticity of the actors makes this a truly exceptional movie.
Favorite scene: The ending. I won't give anything away but it gave me chills.
Comedy
Napoleon Dynamite
2004
If you're a 2000s kid, there's almost a 100% guarantee that you've seen this movie. The subtle awkward humor and time period you can't quite put your finger on are some of the things that make this movie so unique. If you haven't seen it yet, watch it RIGHT NOW.
Favorite Scene: The Dojo
Thriller
The Voices
2014
The Voices isn't nearly as famous as the other movies on this list, but its still incredibly interesting. Basically Ryan Reynolds believes that his dog and cat are talking to him, a kind of fresh take on the angel and devil on the shoulders, the dog being the voice of morality and the cat being the voice of evil.
Favorite Scene: Don't have one in particular.
WARNING: Lots of gore. Kidnapping involved.
Fantasy
Pan's Labyrinth
2006
Monsters? Check. Historical significance? Check. A super badass little girl as the protagonist? Check. This movie is gorgeously made and heart wrenching. Fans of movies like Harry Potter and Crimson Peak will enjoy this one.
Favorite Scene: The Pale Man
WARNING: Some scenes of graphic violence.
Romance
Moonrise Kingdom
2012
Okay, so I know a lot of people wouldn't consider this a romance movie, but I absolutely hate romance movies, this is the only thing even remotely close to a romance movie that I really enjoyed. It stars Sam and Suzy, two tweens who run away together. This movie has bits of humor, lovely cinematography, and a heartwarming plot.
Favorite Scene: The one where Suzy snaps.
Action
Kill Bill
2003
A Tarantino classic, this movie takes on gore in a hyperbolic manner. It's almost so crazy, it doesn't really bother you. We know blood wouldn't spurt out of a decapitated human neck like a fire hose, and since its so unrealistic, it ads a bit of camp and humor. The plot revolves around Uma Thurman's character (who is never named and just referred to as 'the bride') getting revenge on those that have wronged her. What did they do? You'll just have to watch. The soundtrack is absolutely killer, and like many other movies on this list, its incredibly unique.
Favorite Scene: The Origin of O-Ren Ishii. Lucy Liu is my favorite badass in this movie. (Sorry Uma Thurman)
WARNING: Sexual assault. LOTS of gore and violence. Like a lot.
