Though 2017 was a tough year on the box office, it was an interesting year for Hollywood. Not only were some of the highest-rate, anticipated movies released, but the movie industry was highly impacted by the #MeToo movement. As I look back on the rollercoaster that was 2017, I can't help but think about my favorite movies that were released this year.
1. "Wonder Woman"
Not only is "Wonder Woman" the amazing backstory of Diana Prince, but the effect that it had on women is unparalleled. The effects are incredible, the plot line is exciting, and Diana and Steve's relationship is so equal.
2. "Get Out"
Rated 99% by Rotten Tomatoes, "Get Out" has the perfect balance of humor to horror. Not only is the film scary on the surface level, but it is terrifyingly representative of how white Americans view African-Americans in today's society. It is one of those movies where you notice things the second and third time around that you catch didn't on the first watch. So if you haven't even given it your first pass, please do so.
3. "Lady Bird"
As my best friend slept next to me at the theater, I was entranced by this glorious coming-of-age story. High school senior Lady Bird's experiences are insanely relatable, heartbreaking, and amusing, especially if you were raised Catholic.
4. "IT"
It's strange that I have two horror movies on here, as I am usually the last person that would willingly choose to watch a scary movie, but "Get Out" and "IT" are the exceptions. Like "Get Out," "IT" had me laughing and screaming out of fear within the same five minutes.
5. "The Big Sick"

Both heartwarming and heartbreaking, The Big Sick is about comedian Kumail Nanjiani 's true story about how he met his now wife, Emily. While Kumail's parents are trying to set him up with Pakistani women, Emily ends up in a coma and Kumail ends up spending a few days with Emily's parents.
6. "Okja"
"Okja" is a Netflix original about a genetically modified super pig named Okja. Okja was raised by a Korean farmer and his granddaughter. Okja is picked as the best super pig and is brought to the United States by the corporation that invented her species. Okja brings to light the complications of the mass production of meat and power-hungry business people.
7. "Dunkirk"
Dunkirk is unlike many war movies because it starts off right before the invasion. You are able to make up your own backstories about the characters and there is more time to focus on the action. The film is also split into three different times until the invasion. It is exciting and may have you leaving the theater in tears.
