I don’t know about you, but I’m sick and tired of Top 40 radio. The same songs over and over and over and over again -- in the same order too. Most mainstream albums that do live up to the hype, but it’s just that the songs are overplayed. Tsk tsk, quite unfortunate. Here are a few alternatives for you to break out of your Top 40 radio rut.
If you like Katy Perry’s album “Teenage Dream” -- Betty Who
If you love dreamy, infectious power-pop songs with carefree lyrics, then Betty Who’s debut, full-length album will make you dance even more than Katy Perry’s “Last Friday Night.” The perfect soundtrack to cheer you up after a brutal breakup.
Recommended for those who like: cotton candy, glow-in-the-dark stars, strawberry gelato.
Start with “Heartbreak Dream.”
If you like Lorde’s album “Pure Heroine” -- BANKS
Like Lorde’s dark imagery and dreamy vocals? BANKS is just what you needed. Contrary to her sunny Californian roots, BANKS has a taste for gloomy, avant-garde alt-pop packaged with her emotionally charged vocals.
Recommended for those who like: black coconut ash ice cream, sneaking out after curfew, battle armor.

If you like Ed Sheeran’s album “x” -- Shawn Mendes
Okay, maybe a little more well-known than the rest on the list, since “Stitches” has been on the radio 24/7 for the past year (and his shows are selling out in minutes). Nevertheless, Shawn has only recently entered the music scene with his debut album “Handwritten” and is currently taking the world by storm with his acoustic, Sheeran-esque pop.
Recommended for those who like: polite Canadians, boys with guitars, rain droplets on car windows.

If you like The Weeknd’s album “Beauty Behind the Madness” -- Troye Sivan
Creatively and intelligently executed, Troye’s “Blue Neighborhood” is like you’re living inside a dream. The parallels between Troye and The Weeknd exist beyond the breathy vocals and hip-hop-infused beat -- like our very own Abel Tesfaye, Troye is raw, honest, and openhearted. He captures the sound of now more than any other artist does.
Recommended if you like: the color blue, pale moonlight, the word “aesthetic.”

If you like Sam Smith’s “In the Lonely Hour” -- Lianne La Havas
Lianne La Havas: perhaps the most underrated artist in the music scene today. Similar to Smith, Lianne is soulful, introspective, and Grammy-nominated.
Recommended if you like: blood orange, knitted scarves, stargazing.
Start with “Wonderful.”
Have a wonderful week, Bears. Make good choices!
