The Fault In Your Plotline About Cancer

Cancer isn't a fad.

There's a disturbing trend going in pop culture today. Anywhere you look there's some new TV show, movie, or book about a person with cancer. I bet you're familiar with the "Fault in Our Stars," "Me Earl and the Dying Girl," or "The Big C."

All about cancer. All romanticizing cancer.

Someone told me once that they liked the "Fault in Our Stars" because it more than a love story, it's a book about what it's like to have cancer.

Is it? Is it, really?

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy the movie. I'm not saying it's a bad thing to write about cancer or make a movie about cancer. It's real and it happens.

But don't make the disease a gimmick.

It freaks me out that Hollywood is using the tragedy that is all too real for many families as a way to make money. That seems pretty wrong to me

Cancer isn't a fad.

It's not a trend.

When "Twilight" first came out, everything was about vampires for a while.

Then zombies became the next big topic.

Then distopian novels where the main character was a girl who had to singlehandedly save the world.

Now, cancer?

It just frustrates me that Hollywood is using it as a canvas to display another angsty, hormone-fueled teen romance. I don't think we should make entertainment out of this. It would be one thing if any of these books, movies, or TV shows were any kind of realistic but they are not. It doesn't show the ugly, uncomfortable parts of disease. It glosses over them like afterthoughts, as if the whole point of the character even having the disease is to add to the 'Romeo and Juliet' effect and not how the disease, in all its facets, impacts families and relationships.

I think it's disrespectful to cancer patients and their families.

I'm just saying, don't simplify cancer by using it as a way to make pre teen girls cry.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
