College is a time to become a truly self-expressive individual. No longer bound to the confines of your familial life, you are now catering to your own adult tendencies. In this case, you may be drawing, painting, photographing; maybe even wearing something new and exciting.
Fashion has been a medium that almost every person on this planet can relate to. Our clothing defines our mood, interests and sense of belonging. One thing I've noticed about college is that these roles are brought to a whole new level in comparison to the high school experience. Now that we are classified as young adults, we can treat our bodies as young adults typically do. In this case, we have full custody over what we wear and dedicate to the peers we surround ourselves with.
A college campus can almost be seen as a runway all in itself. Since a typical collegiate student body is so diverse, we get different stylistic norms intersecting between one another. In today's college trend, it seems that a DIY, low-cost look is something that everybody is after. Whether it's a sales rack at ZARA, or just a jean jacket from Goodwill, every student wants a look that can be mixed and matched, time and time again.
Most of the time, our outfits are a product of our environment. Just transporting myself from New York to Philadelphia, I've seen a huge shift from high-end chic to a thrifting culture unlike any other. One thing that any millennial should aspire to is widespread travel; who knows what kind of trend in a new area can grab your attention.
Why give fashion so much of a spotlight? The whole concept of style is one that embodies all aspects of college life. This is a time of pure individualism; much like the clothing you pick out each day. It gives us motivation to work hard and eventually buy that item that's been on your wish list the past few months. Overall, it's a way to help discover a new part of yourself.
