With Halloween fast approaching, it's time to start thinking about what you're going to wear to make an entrance to that crazy party, slay at that haunted house, or simply wear at the door of your home so children can marvel at you as you hand out treats.
For those who are fashion-inclined, Halloween has many opportunities to showcase a more daring style aesthetic, or to emulate your favourite fashionable pop-culture heroes.
Here are a few fashionable Halloween costume ideas to inspire your inner (or outer) fashion maven:
1. Gigi Hadid
(Sweater: Valentino, Leggings: Adidas by Stella McCartney, Bomber: Saint Laurent, Sneakers: Adidas, Sunglasses: Dior)
Model-of-the moment Gigi Hadid's look has a very elevated-casual feel to it; hence her signature sneakers. To emulate this gorgeous girl, wear white sneakers with dressier pieces, such as a satin bomber jacket or duster coat. If you feel bold enough, you can sport a crop top; just make sure to balance it with heavier pieces, like an oversized jacket. Pair with nude makeup.
2. David Bowie (1970s)
(Blazer: Akris, Jumpsuit: Ashish, Earrings: Vintage,Shoes: Balenciaga, Scarf: Henri Bendel)
Bowie is hailed as a music icon, and with good reason. His 1970s persona of Ziggy Stardust was among the first instances of fashion as a means of blurring binary gender norms on stage. His Ziggy Stardust look was anything but shy, with bright prints, sequins, high-heels and bright makeup to compliment his phenomenal sound. To capture his essence, wear a bold jumpsuit and complete it with platforms and vibrant eyeshadow. Although Bowie has recently passed, his music and creative spirit remain immortal.
3. 2000s It-Girl
(Hat: Von Dutch, Tracksuit: Juicy Couture, Bag: Louis Vuitton, Skirt: Marc by Marc Jacobs, Shoes: Chanel)
It's safe to say that the 2000s were not the most fashionable of decades, but bless, it had a few redeeming things (Destiny's Child!). To channel this it-girl look, think of all the things you may have begged your parents for when you were younger: a Juicy Couture velour tracksuit, a white Louis Vuitton bag etc. Pair with a Lancome glossy tube and some celebrity perfume (bonus points for Britney Spear's or Paris Hilton's) and you are ready to be the next Lindsay Lohan! On second thought...
4. Anna Wintour
(Shrug: Vintage, Dress: Dolce and Gabbana, Necklace: Erickson Beamon, Sunglasses: Linda Farrow x The Row, Shoes: Office)
No fashion costume list could be complete without Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue USA. Famous for wearing shades to fashion shows (to throw shade most likely!) and for having an icy countenance, this fashion queen has the power to launch a designer into epic success, or plunge them into the depths of anonymity. Who wouldn't want to wear her shoes for a day?
5. Rosemary in Rosemary's Baby
(Shoes and dress both vintage)
Rosemary's Baby is a movie that was released in the 60s and stars Mia Farrow as a woman who becomes pregnant with Satan's child. Although the film has perfect horror vibes for Halloween, it is the style of the film that allows it to be on this list. Rosemary's style is quintessentially 60s, with short shift dresses and flats, which translate perfectly to the screen. Be sure to craft a pregnant belly by using a pillow or a similar method, and carry a knife to ward off those who are trying to take your baby away from you.
6. Amy Winehouse
(Bandana: River Island, Bra: Agent Provocateur, Shorts: Alexander Wang, Earrings: Bling, Shoes: Go Jane, Eyeliner: Eye Do)
This tragic but uber-talented singer had a memorable impact on fashion, often wearing vintage inspired pin-up pieces, like a bandana and an exaggerated cat-eye. Showcase some fancy lingerie under a plaid shirt (tied Daisy Duke style) paired with some jean shorts and sky-high heels. Be sure to also perfect that huge beehive hairdo- if you can!
