“A girl should be two things: who and what she wants.”
- Coco Chanel
I like fashion. I also like the respect of my body. Don’t get me wrong, there’s clothes everywhere. Good clothes. Clothes that are respectful and cute. Clothes everywhere. Trendy stores, thrift stores, your sisters closet, your friends dirty basket, your moms old t-shirt from the 70s, that pair of shoes you found on the road and decided to take.
But there is that pressure especially with todays trends. Not everyone feels that pressure and definitely not everyone cares. Whatever the case and whatever the current fashionable trend, there are always women who buy into the trend, those who rebel against it and those who are unaware of it.
But to those women that find confidence, joy, and fun in fashion whatever the style or trend you desire…there may be that tiny bit of pressure, no matter your age. I can relate.
You may be thinking pressure, what? We aren’t all supermodels dressed for the runway or Victoria Secret models barely dressed for a fashion show.
Ya know what I mean.
You wanna look good for that guy that you've never spoken too but buys Starbucks the same time you do every morning.
You wanna dress for the interview because you want to impress those people and show how adult and creative you are, even if thats not 100% true.
You want to present yourself a certain way at school or work.
You want your husband to notice.
You want to express yourself and feel positive about yourself.
You want fashion to be your voice, hobby, time-filler…whatever it is, you know.
But, you also respect your body and rightly so should.
Societies trends don’t make it easy and neither does your wallet. Fashion changes as we know but do we have to change with it? Especially if we don’t want too? Trends that make you feel exposed, give unrealistic ideas of what you will look like or give your mind ideas of what you should look like.
This effects
your mind,
your body image,
your views on other woman,
mens views on us.
Yuck
Fashion is lovely and this article isn't meant to down grade any trend, style, or choice but just to add a friendly remember: dress confidently, beautifully, and most of all modestly ladies. Wear your own style, be you. That friend, that guy should love you for other reasons.
You should love yourself for other reasons.
Note To Self: The next time you reach for those yoga pants or for that top, ask yourself how will that clothing item make you feel and what is it saying to the world around you today?
