7 Reasons You Should Visit A Farmers' Market Instead Of Another Trip To The Grocery Store

There is no doubt that grocery stores are a convenient source for anything we may need. When the fridge becomes empty or you're missing an ingredient in your recipe, there is pretty much a store on every corner to rely on.

But the next time you need to restock your usual grocery needs, you may want to try something new and head over to your local farmers' market where you can get high-quality goods for lower prices.

Here are some of the many benefits of choosing farmers' markets over supermarkets.

1. You are supporting small farmers.

As a small business and farmer, it can be competitive and difficult to keep thriving. By buying goods from a farmers' market, your money is going directly to farmers who work hard to care for their products, which not only looks nice but tastes amazing as well.

2. It helps you stay healthy.

Many booths contain tons of fresh fruits and vegetables. I would much rather buy in season, wholesome food rather than wondering if the soon-to-be-expired spinach at the grocery store is worth the purchase. Also, since you are surrounded by mostly healthy options, you are not tempted to buy processed, high-sugar foods.

3. Getting outside is good for you.

Farmers' markets are generally held outdoors. While roaming around outside, you are not only getting vitamin D but being exposed to nature produces endorphins which makes us feel happy and energized. It's a great way to take a break from your day and destress.

4. You may avoid overspending.

Contrary to the common belief, it is found that on average, buying from a farmers' market tends to cost less than at a regular supermarket. In a study at Seattle University, students compared the prices for a list of vegetables and found that the prices were much lower at the farmers' market.

5. Choose from so many different options.

There are fruits and veggies you will find at the farmers' market that you may have never seen in your local grocery store. This variety presents an opportunity to go out of your comfort zone and try something new. There are also organic options you are able to choose from.

6. There are plants.

For all you plant lovers out there, there are often beautiful flowers, vegetable and fruit trees, herbs, and indoor plants. It's difficult for me to go to the farmers' market without buying a little succulent.

7. It's an enjoyable experience.

The farmers' market I go to is full of super friendly people. I think it is fun to grab a coffee, socialize, and learn about people's lives, pet people's dogs, all while picking up delicious produce. Plus, since your purchase does not involve shipment which uses fuel, you can feel good about your lower carbon footprint and know that you are helping the environment.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
