The Farm From A Box: Your Very Own Off-Grid Farm
Farm from a Box

Wouldnā€™t it be nice if there were such a thing as a farm starter-kit, capable of providing communities with the means to become self-sufficient? Oh, wait. A California-based company has created just that.

The Farm From a Box is an amazing farming toolkit that re-purposes shipping containers to present everything your need to construct your own off-grid farm. With just one of these containers, you will be able to produce one hectare (almost 2.5 acres) worth of crops using the seeds and tools they supply.

The box itself is pre-installed with 10 high-efficiency solar panels, LED lighting, secured storage, a mobile charging area, a water purification system, Wi-Fi and a Trojan Battery bank for energy storage. All of which is backed up by a 3,000-watt generator.

Also included is a solar-powered pump and drip irrigation system that is used to deliver small droplets of water and fertilizer to the plants. Meaning that farmers using this amazing toolkit do not need to depend on rain to tend to their crops. They can grow all the food they can without needing to be concerned about the weather.

ā€œFarm from a Box is the ā€˜Swiss-Army knifeā€™ of sustainable farming,ā€ claimed Brandi DeCarli, co-founder of Farm from a Box. ā€œBased on extensive field research, we found that rural communities often lack the resources and infrastructure needed to access nutritious food. We developed a toolkit that contains all of the core components needed to grow your own food, on a two-acre plot of land, without the need for an existing grid. Imagine the good it can do by growing local, organic food for a school or helping jumpstart food production after a disaster. Farm from a Box enables and empowers communities to provide for themselves.ā€

There are currently three types of boxes you can order: the 10, 20 and 30-foot units. Each box can be customized however its owner or community would like, and Fast Company reports that each unit costs between $25,000-$45,000, depending on the technology specs installed.

Just imagine the possible applications of the Farm from a Box. They can range from helping new farmers get started on their crops, to allowing communities or schools to work together and produce local food. It could even be shipped across the world to aid anyone wishing for self-sufficiency. This is a truly wonderful creation.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
