Fall is one of my favorite seasons of the year. Below, I list four of the reasons why I rediscover my love for the season each time it comes around.
1. Sweater Weather
I am a huge fan of sundresses, sandals and warm weather in general. As such, it’s always a little bit harder for me to get used to fall’s chilly temperatures. However, the dropping thermometer does have one upside: I can finally break out my cozy sweaters and long-sleeve shirts. On a chilly autumn morning, there’s nothing that prompts me to get out of bed more than the promise of a warm sweater to slide into.
2. Tea Parties
As an avid tea drinker, I enjoy the beverage all year round. However, you are bound to get some odd looks if you indulge in a piping hot mug of tea in the middle of July. But that’s one of the wonderful things about fall; I don’t have to fret about enjoying a mug of chai, or a thermos full of mint tea whenever the urge strikes. In the fall, tea becomes a social activity that helps solidify old friendships and form new ones.
3. Thanksgiving
My family’s favorite holiday (although we have several) is, overwhelmingly, Thanksgiving. I look forward to not only having some time off from school and an opportunity to reconnect with my family, but also partaking in the elaborate feast that my mom prepares. Mashed potatoes, three kinds of pies, homemade stuffing and, of course, a beautiful golden-brown turkey. (What can I say? I’m a foodie). I also enjoy the fact the holiday is universal and free from the commercialization that surrounds many other celebrations in American culture. It’s merely a time to relax, be grateful and surround yourself with the people you love.
4. Fall Colors
One of my classes this semesters is an 8:30 a.m. chemistry lecture. I don't really consider myself a hardcore chemist or a morning person. To be honest, it can be very difficult convincing myself to get out of bed in the morning sometimes. However, once I’m out of the covers, I truly appreciate the beauty that awaits me on my walk to class. The sky is a most amazing shade of blue and the clouds that dot it are brilliantly white. The grass somehow seems greener and the leaves on the trees are an intense shade of orange. It makes getting out of the house and going to chemistry a little more enticing.
I’m trying to do my best to enjoy the beauty of fall while I still can. As quickly as it has come upon us here in western New England, it'll be gone sooner still. If you’ll excuse me, I’m off to brew a mug of tea, throw on a sweater and enjoy my early-morning walk to class.
