My entire life, I have had freckles. I remember that as a little girl, I hated having red hair and freckles because I looked different than everyone else. My family and all the ladies at church would always tell me how beautiful my hair and freckles were, but of course, I did not buy it. As I got older I embraced my look a little more, but I still get the jokes about being a ginger and believe it or not, I get jokes about my freckles too.
"Every freckle you have is a stolen soul." That ridiculous comment came from one of my classmates in middle school. The, of course there's the joke that gingers don't have souls, which I still do not understand, so someone please explain. These jokes did not help an insecure middle schooler feel any less weird.
So, imagine waking up one day, looking at Twitter, and seeing a new makeup trend in which people are putting on fake freckles WITH MAKEUP! I was shocked because I didn't think anyone wanted freckles. Obviously people other than me have freckles, but I never thought people would actually want freckles.
This new trend bothers me for many reasons.
The obvious reason being that I have heard just about every negative thing there is to hear about my face and now all of a sudden it's trendy. No way. Another reason is because this trend insults people with natural freckles. My face is entirely covered in freckles, but of course the people who choose to put freckles on as a part of their daily makeup routine, they only put freckles on their cheeks and around their nose. I will be more impressed if I see someone actually choose to put freckles around the entirety of their face, like me and many other fellow freckled people.
So to me, this trend is confusing. It's trendy to have freckles, but only on certain parts of your face. I guess the rest of my face and body missed the memo because freckles cover my entire face, arms, legs, and back.
I guess part of me should be happy that more people are trying to give themselves freckles and embrace freckles, like me. But did any of these people really earn those freckle? And by earn, I mean steal any souls or at least get teased for stealing souls. Just like anything else, I think that every part of a person's face or body comes with character and should be appreciated because every person is different and that's how I started embracing my look. I understand the fact that people aren't supposed to look the same, but we won't all be different if we all keep trying to look like someone else.
