Generation Y is considered to be teens or twenty-somethings, specifically in the United States, meaning we, as college students, are apart of this huge generation. Gen Y is even bigger than the Baby Boomers, with 10,000 of us turning 21 every day. In this day and age, people have a lot to say about college-age kids. With the media painting us as irresponsible and inconsiderate, we're fighting an uphill battle to prove otherwise.
Our generation, also known as the millennials or the Global Generation, are harshly criticized by older generations. They think we're lazy, seek instant gratification, and are incapable of commitment, both to one another and in the job market. But we've got a lot to say in response to that. While the media focuses too closely on our pitfalls, we're making huge strides to make a huge difference. In fact, statistics may say exactly that. We're going to make a difference. Generation Y is going to change the world one day, because we know we can.
Overall, Gen Y is considered to be the most ambitious generation alive today. With the biggest dreams the world has ever seen and the desire to make them a reality, we've already got more going for us than any generation before. We have the drive to make things happen, because we're passionate about the things that matter to us. From passion comes some of the greatest inventions, art, music, and businesses the world has ever seen and since millennials are more concerned with job fulfillment than salary, we focus on what truly matters to us as individuals.
This falls in line with being passionate about what we do. We've become more concerned with being happy in our jobs, because we know that we'll succeed faster and live more fulfilling lives doing something we love. Our parents' generation has always steered us to find jobs that are going to put food on the table. We're starting to realize, though, that we don't have to hate our jobs to make money. Money has fallen to the background in choosing a career path and major for most people, allowing to focus on what we truly care about, and become experts in fields that interest us.
And we're already starting to make a difference doing what we love. Sixty-one percent of millennials believe their purpose is to make a difference in this world. Isn't that incredible? Over half of us believe not only that it's possible to make a difference, but are making it our life's mission to do so.
With 61 percent of us working to make a difference, through higher education, cultural awareness, and simple curiosity, there's no chance that we'll leave the world without making it a better place.
Gen Y is currently on track to become the most educated generation in American history. Being more knowledgeable about the world around us ensures that we're going to make wiser decisions as a whole. That being said, with knowledge comes power, and we have the power to decide how we want to shape the world.
So yeah, maybe we are the instant gratification era and maybe we do get awards just for participating. But we're passionate and smart leaders who are ready and willing to take control of the world around us. We have the numbers to make this world something incredible. And we will.
