8 Factors High School Seniors Should Consider BEFORE Deciding On A College
Lyndsey Murphy

Choosing a college can be scary, and just thinking about it can induce anxiety. It definitely helps to know what you should take into account when making your decision.

These are a few things you need to think about before you choose a college!

1. The campus

College is much more than just going to school. You are going to be living there for the next four years — or longer! So, make sure you can visualize yourself living on the campus before you decide on that school.

2. Your major

Your major is definitely an important aspect of your choosing process. You don’t want to go to a college that specializes in nursing if you want to major in economics.

3. Friends

Of course, you don't want to be surrounded by the same people from high school. And if your best friend doesn't want to go to the same college as you, that should not be a deal breaker. But try to find at least three people you know you can be friends with when you tour.

4. Money

College is expensive. Your parents want you to go to a good college and get a good education, but please be realistic.

5. Scholarships

There are scholarships for everything these days. It is so easy to find multiple scholarships you can apply for, and most schools will accept them.

6. Distance

The distance from your current home to your new home is important. It can increase the tuition. Or, if you move far from home, you might be really lonely until you get used to living by yourself.

7. Happiness

When you tour the campus, be conscious of how you feel when you are there. If you are happy while you are in the hustle and bustle of campus life, you will most likely be happy when you go to school there.

8. Your grades

Grades are very important. If you go to a party campus and expect to make good grades, good luck.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but make sure you are treating your schoolwork like a full-time job.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
