David and Goliath. Batman and Robin. Ariel and Ursula. All of these characters faced giants, either once or multiple times throughout their life. The same thing goes for our generation. We face giants each and every day. Fear. Anxiety. Anger. Self Harm. Pain. Body Image. Those are just a few examples of what giants have overtaken our daily lives.
Goliath was a 9 foot tall beast and David was this puny little man. During this time, David was to tend to his sheep in Bethlehem while his older brothers were out fighting with the Israelite army getting ready to take down Goliath, who was part of the Philistine army. One day, instead of tending to his flock, Saul asked David to bring cheese and crackers to the battlefield in order to see how David's older brothers were doing. So David went out and brought his brothers cheese and crackers, wondering why no one has defeated this giant yet.
Later on in the story, David was wondering if there was a chance he, himself could defeat Goliath, since this giant was so big and mighty. In 1 Samuel 16:7 (NIV) it states, “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’” God reassures David that he can, in fact, defeat Goliath.
After being questioned by Saul on his ability to defeat this giant, David came back and stated that he’s defeated a lion and a bear before with his own two hands. At this time, David had no fear about defeating Goliath for one reason and one reason alone. The Almighty God was on his side. After being mocked by Goliath, David ran up to the battle line, pulled out his sling and stone and struck Goliath right in the head. Goliath then came tumbling down and David proceeded to cut Goliath's head off.
Like David, our generation fights bears and lions each day. The bears and lions we face each day are capable of turning into giants that can last a lifetime. However, every now and then, we can decide to cave into them or we can defeat them head on.
Throughout the whole process of defeating our giants, one thing is for certain; God is there and will always be the one who never leaves. He reminds us that it doesn't matter what we look like, where we come from, or what we fear. He ultimately looks at the heart. There isn't a need to worry about fear, body image, anger, and pain. Although they may consume our daily lives, God made us in his image. We are His children.
