What To Expect

So you are ready to adventure out into the big city and take over anything and everything that gets in your way, at least that's what you think.

There is so much to discover in New York and so many places to see as well as extra fees coming from right and left. So how do you prepare to go and what to pay for? Well here are a few steps to read to help you take on the big apple:

1. Toll

If you are taking a car, remember to have money to prepare for tolls because there is almost a toll to pay for in every state. Also, tolls can add up and get pretty expensive. When I went from North Carolina to New York, the total toll cost was around $44.00 dollars.

2. Gas

The gas cost can add a pretty hefty amount on your trip, depending on what type of car you go in, so before you go calculate how many miles you can go before fueling up. This will help you have an estimated amount to save up.

3. Parking Garage

When you get to New York, there is no where to park unless you can find a parking garage and they can range from $30.00-$80.00 a night. To help plan for this, look up coupons on ipark.com and you should find some great deals. My friends and I were able to find one for only $20.00 a night.

4. Taxi

To get to place to place you have to think about transportation and taxis are everywhere in New York. Also, they are very convenient. A taxi ride costs about $20.00 for a 22 minute ride.

5. Subway

This is the cheapest part of transportation and only costs $3.00. The only thing is subways can get really confusing because there are different trains to take and some go to different towns. If you do not know how to use one like me, ask someone who works there. They will help you.

6. Food

Food in New York is constantly at a fast pace speed so there are food carts every where, which is helpful if you are on the go and it's very cheap. I never paid more then $3.00 for it. Also, New Yorkers are big brunch eaters so try to get brunch at least once while you are there, and brunch is normally less then $10.00 a person.

7. Driving

If you are not used to fast pace driving and people honking their horns at you, it can get pretty hectic really fast. So mentally prepare yourself for the taxi ride or driving into New York because it can cause your anxiety to go up.

8. Busyness

Twenty-four seven there are people out and about, they do not call it the city that never sleeps for no reason. You are going to get pushed and shoved in crowds along with feeling like you are being trampled on.

9. Water

Make sure you have some form of water with you because you literally walk everywhere because it is very easy to get dehydrated. When exploring New York, you are probably going to walk more then 10 miles a day easily so make sure you keep your health in check.

New York was a wonderful experience that I wish everyone gets to enjoy. It is full of lights, sounds, and buildings I have never seen before. Also, there is just an energy in the air I have not experienced any where else. It brings new experience and life, that everyone should feel. I hope these tips help you on your adventure to New York.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
