It is a dangerous time on the Internet nowadays. People can steal your information or your money, they can be complete jerks and terrorize you, and they could be selling (or giving) your information to other people. But why sacrifice something that could change your world because of having a fear that you’ll get hurt? At this point, all I really want are new experiences and new friends. Which is why its fun and exciting to have pen pals, whether they are email pen pals or actual letter pen pals.
Having a pen pal is basically the same thing as going into a chatroom, night after night talking with people, but with less of the weird people who are trying to send you things you never wanted in the first place, and more with the assurance that you can have a decent conversation without it turning into a nightmare. I guess it is more predictable, opposed to chatrooms.
The key to finding a good pen pal is to not lie about what you are interested in – kind of like freshman year when you filled out your housing information and you described yourself and told the school what you could tolerate and things you couldn’t. This is exactly like that process, but you can either post your information for the world to see, or find someone who posted the information for the world to see. I used Tumblr, mainly because there are a lot of people on Tumblr and many different accounts dedicated to pen pals.
I posted my information for everyone to see, if they looked hard enough, and I have had several people contact me on Tumblr and email me. We have become great friends and there was never anything too awkward. But, yes, of course, I don’t really know if the person is who they truly say to be, but if they are going all through this trouble just to talk to a faceless girl, they must have a lot of free time. It would be pretty silly honestly. And just a waste of their time because the conversations are invigorating and thought provoking. You just have to get in contact with the right people and have fun with it. Just be yourself.
