Many people begin setting high expectations for themselves for the next 11 months in January with resolutions and goals but yet, we rarely hear back from these same loud-mouths later on in the year.
Although, you may "expect" a raise in the next calendar year, whether it occurs or not you have to live with the results, not the original expectation you set upon yourself.
Occasionally, sometimes the expectations set by our peers are far too high and effect our process because we want to meet them or exceed them due to the personal ties it inhabits.
The saying "expect the unexpected" has been proven to be very accurate because there's an exponential amount of things that could occur during your process to meet your own expectations.
How does this work out? You let yourself down because you were vulnerable to all of the factors that could make or break the expectation.
We have to realize that we can no longer set expectations, but only expect results.
Results aren't always wins, they'll be times when the final result is a failure and that's okay because the only expectation was to finish what you started.
Finish. Finish. Finish.
I will be one to admit that even writing past articles, I struggle with the same issue. I'll sit down and tell myself, "Okay, this is going to be your best one yet and really catch someone's attention who can really relate." When it's published and no one really relates but just enjoyed the content, I don't stress at all because the goal for me from the beginning is to produce quality writing.
Recognition and rewards are cool but results is the most significant R-word in my vocabulary.
I've been through enough ups and downs to breed a fire inside of me that is merely obsessed with getting to the end of the race, not checkpoints on the way.
Therefore, when job interviewers have previously proposed any question concerning their expectations or my own for myself, I simply tell them and establish that despite any circumstances or lapses during the process I'll get the job done.
Despite my personal belief, I respect people who use expectations as a driving force behind their actions because it takes a lot to put all your efforts into one, specific expectation.
With that, I do propose a question to the person reading this that's offended.
What happens when that expectation isn't met?
Do you lose all your motivation to finish what you have begun? Think about it.
Similarly to a lot of people, I began this year with a new view of things and I told myself I will finish this year mentally and emotionally stronger than I came in. Now that's an expectation I can meet.
