What To Actually Expect During Sorority Recruitment

What To Actually Expect During Sorority Recruitment

Northwestern's formal recruitment is coming up this week, and I'm sure many PNMs are wondering how the week will go. Of course, there have been countless workshops and talks, but those aren't the same as seeing the real thing. So what will you actually be feeling this week?

Thursday, Set I

Before: Six parties! Woohoo! Surely, this can't be as bad as preview was, so I'm good to go.

During: I have talked to so many people. I'm never going to be able to keep them all straight.

After: Self, meet bed. Homework can wait.

Friday, Set I

Before: OK, so yesterday was really long, and I only kind of remember who I talked to. I definitely need to take better notes today.

During: I wonder if anyone has noticed that I'm wearing literally the exact same thing today as I did yesterday and during preview. These PNM T-shirts really don't allow many options.

After: Yeah, so I don't remember anyone I talked to yesterday. How am I going to narrow this down? Hmm, I guess I'll just assume that if I don't remember them, they don't matter. Bye!

Saturday, Set II

Before: Oh my God, I'm so exhausted. I don't think I can get out of bed. Yesterday and Thursday were so long, and I only went to six houses each night. How am I going to nearly double that today?

During: When's the dinner break?

After: I just want to choose as quickly as possible so I can sleep for a year.

Sunday, Set III

Before: Wait, so yesterday was casual and tomorrow night is dressy. What do I wear today?

During: OMG, these skits are hilarious. I cannot believe these girls put so much effort into this.

After: I did no homework this weekend. Will professors accept recruitment as an excuse for not doing my reading? Yeah, probably not, but I'm going to bed anyway.

Monday, Pref Night

Before: OK, so I've heard that everyone wears black dresses tonight. Should I blend in, or wear a color and stand out from the crowd? Whatever, I just hope I like the houses I'm sent back to tonight.

During: The parties tonight are kind of... weird.

After: I'm done! Thank God, I can get some sleep now. I can't wait for tomorrow!

Tuesday, Bid Night

Oh my God, I'm so excited! OK, BRB while I go meet everyone.

Recruitment can (will) be stressful, but in the end, it will all work out. Just remember to have fun, be yourself, and, most importantly, go where you feel comfortable, because this is going to be your home for the next three years. Have a great week!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
