My significant other happens to be a male and I'm a female. We met our junior year in college and decided we both hated living on campus and thus decided to get a place together for the following year, our senior year. We found a two bedroom duplex with our male roommate.
The Move In
To start off, moving in was beyond stressful. We both showed up at different times, with a ton of stuff. We also both forgot rent was due that same day -- not a great start. So what to expect: things don’t always go as planned.
The Bathroom
Here’s where things get a little messy. The toilet seat being down is an ongoing fight between me and the boys. To this day, I still shout down the stairs to remind them to put it down. There is also the sink being covered with facial hair and wet spots on the floor. So what to expect: things are never going to be as clean as you want them to be.
The Bedroom
Remember how your mother always told you to make your bed and put your clothes away? Well if your significant other is the last one to get out of bed in the morning and their mother wasn’t as strict, then chances are they aren’t going to make the bed or put their clothes away. In my case, I gave up on making the bed and my clothes are all over the place -- he’s not always happy about that. So what to expect: you will find yourself changing habits.
The Kitchen
Neither one of us is huge into cooking; we eat Chipotle at least twice a week, and we make frozen pizza at least three times a week. You can imagine how neglected our kitchen must feel. But, on those rare occasions that we do open up the cupboards, and break out the pots and pans, the kitchen will most likely end be engulfed by a mountain of dishes. Dishes turn into a problem and neither one of us will want to clean them. So what to expect: you won’t have to cook for each other all the time.
The Living Room
Like most college students we spend a lot of time in the living room, either watching TV, on our computers, studying or any combo of the three. We opted out of cable and thus never fight over the remote. We actually have enough seating for all three of us and a coffee table to match. So what to expect: the TV room becomes the main area to be in.
The Future
With the lack of cleaning, no cooking and the main area of the house being the living room, things aren’t what I expected, but they’re not the worst of circumstances either. When senior year is over, I will miss waking up to my S.O.’s morning face, coming home to a warm smile and curling up on the couch next to the one who calls me beautiful every day.
