It's not that bad, I promise.

What To Expect During Your First Week Of College

As the days of summer are quickly counting down, there’s one thing on a lot of recent high school graduates’ minds: college. There are some that are excited, some are nervous, and others don’t know what to think (that’s okay, just so you know).

The lucky ones have an older sibling or a friend to give them the rundown of what to expect during freshman year.

“Wait,” you think, “no one’s told me anything about college.”

Calm down; there’s really not that much you need to know. However, there are a couple of things you need to expect when going into your first week.

You’re going to meet people that you don’t like.

*Gasp*

Oh, you thought everyone at college was going to be super great? LOL guess again. There’s still going to be those annoying, obnoxious, or rude people that you just can’t stand. They’ll be on your floor or in your chemistry lab or in that club you joined on a whim. On the plus side, it’s a lot easier to avoid them when your class is bigger than your entire high school.

The friends you meet during the first week won’t be your BFFs.

On very rare occasions, someone meets his/her college best friend right off the bat. That is also know as your "day one." Some of us weren't that lucky and had to do some serious searching to find quality friends. Moral of the story: don't feel sad or discouraged when you realize you don't love your friends right away.

You’re going to see some icky things.

It’s hard to be specific when discussing these “things” you’re going to see. For starters, communal bathrooms are absolutely repulsive, so if you take 5 seconds and look around one, odds are you’ll want to vomit. The same goes for the campus fitness center and frat houses.

One of your professors is going to be an asshole.

This is something you’re going to have to deal with for your entire college career. Professors are there to teach you, not coddle you like high school teachers tended to do. Unfortunately, nothing is stopping your new profs from assigning three chapters of reading during syllabus week. Good luck. :-)

You’re going to miss your family.

You’re going to deny it and repress all of those feelings. Don’t even try. It’s perfectly normal to miss the ones you love! I’m not saying have to have 3-hour long phone conversations with your mom every night or text your high school boyfriend 24/7 when you should actually be making friends. That’s actually very discouraged. Try to maintain those relationships while making new ones at college. It’s a hard balance to find, but it’s possible.

There you have it. Some of the most common things you’re going to experience during your first week of college. It’s not going to be perfect, but it’ll sure be memorable, so enjoy it!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
