Eyewitness Of The JMU Police Standoff Tells His Story

For Mohammed Hussain, junior at James Madison University (JMU), Tuesday, November 15 started off like any other morning. He got up, ate breakfast, took a shower and headed to campus for his 8 a.m. class. Little did Hussain know, today would be one of the craziest days of his life.

Around 8:45 a.m. this morning, Hussain received a call from Harrisonburg Police, informing him of an incident that was unfolding in his apartment at The Harrison, a local apartment complex.

Soon after, Hussain received an alert from JMU with an undetailed message, “The Harrisonburg Police Department is working an incident at 1173 Devon Lane. Please stay clear until further notice.”

Hussain immediately left campus (although the police and JMU advisory warned him to stay away from the scene) and went straight to his apartment to attempt to find out more about what was unfolding in his home. Hussain was met by Harrisonburg Police, Rockingham SWAT Team, Virginia State Police and Virginia State Police SWAT, who had begun to surround his building in an attempt to resolve the situation.

I sat down with Hussain to get the inside scoop.

Over six hours after the original JMU alert, the university sent out another message that said, "The incident at 1173 Devon Lane has been resolved. Subject has been taken into custody. Law Enforcement will continue on scene investigation."

Hussain ended the day with several key takeaways: he and his roommates are safe, the JMU community is supportive in times of difficulty and the worst thing that came out of this situation is that his window is completely shattered, making his room extremely cold.

Daily Fun Lists

One of the most dreaded places on campus is the library. Nothing awesome ever happens here. Usually, the only reason you're here is because you've procrastinated so long that the library is the only place you'll actually get stuff done. It gives you this feeling of sadness and impending doom. You have no idea how this is going to go or how long you'll be here, but you do know it is about to be the most excruciating experiences yet. But it has to get done, so you drag yourself to the lovely library.

With each new year comes new goals.

Deciding on a goal can be hard, unsure of what to change for this new year. A new goal for myself is to be happier and take care of myself more. I am a very driven person; so driven that I commit to a million and ten things.

It is that time of year again. Christmastime. It is one of my favorite seasons for a myriad of reasons. Here are just a few reasons why I love Christmas. This list is in no order of importance.

1. The Christmas decorations

I am that person who will decorate directly after Thanksgiving is over. This year, my roommates and I put the tree up in our apartment before we even left for Thanksgiving break. It is a great stress reliever for me to just sit in my living room and work on the huge amount of work I have before the semester is over.
