The top drawer of my dresser is full of t-shirts. Not pretty, fitted American Apparel shirts or boob-enhancing v-necks–– those are the next drawer down. No, the top drawer of my dresser contains several t-shirts that are way too big, a couple oversized frat tanks, and an old sweatshirt. Guys shirts. These aren't shirts I bought from Wal-Mart because they're comfier, but instead, these are the shirts from semi-formals and philanthropies, boyfriends and my friends that are guys. They're not super cute and they aren't the most flattering, but they're still the best thing in my wardrobe.
We all know what a shack shirt is. It's the shirt you get after you have hooked up with a guy. It's cozy. At least that's what they were. Not anymore though. Shack shirts hold a negative connotation; it's a tangible marker of the “Walk of Shame" that will last forever. That's all changing though. Shack shirts are no longer a sign of a trashy rendezvous, they are becoming a form of memorabilia. That's nothing new though, they have always been reminders. In the last few years though, instead of just being a reminder of a shameful night after a few too many, they are souvenirs from people and events you don't want to forget.
The shack shirt obsession is rampant among college girls. You're collection no longer symbolizes how many people you've been with, it represents the events you've attended, frats you're close with, or men who find you desirable. The assortment of men's shirts that you possess is a statement, wether a statement that he wants you wearing his letters, that you're thinking of him, or just that you were present for a function. My roommate went on a fraternity semi-formal in fall, and a semester later, she doesn't care that she hasn't talked to the guy since, but she's still salty that she never got the t-shirt. After all, how can people be jealous if they don't know she was there?
Even companies like Rowdy Gentleman are embracing the new definition of the shack shirt. Their new "Lady Designs" collection exemplifies this change with the tag line: “Easily obtained, shack free". I'm not stupid, and I'm not naïve, I know that the original use of the shack shirt is still alive and well, but it's no longer the only reason for a girl to be wearing an on oversized men's shirt.
Welcome to the new era of the shack shirt!
