Being a freshman in college is definitely a struggle for almost everyone. The first week or so tends to be the hardest. To understand my struggle, I will tell you my first week of college story.
To start off with, everything was great. I got to move in and see my roommate again who I had been talking to all summer. I also got to hang out with my family for two days because of my Welcome Weekend. But then I discovered something.
Our toilet was stopped up. Like it would not flush at all. Also, our shower would not drain and the hot water would not work in it at all. My dad fixed our toilet for us before they left, but the shower was a whole other story. It took about a week for the maintenance people to come and fix our shower, so my roommate and I had to take cold showers for a week straight and there was just a puddle of water under our feet every time we showered because it would not drain. The first week of school was also lonely and I spent most of my time locked up in my dorm room. I would not even eat unless I had someone to eat with because I did not want to be alone. I just felt like crying and packing up all my stuff and moving the two hours back home and I missed everyone.
The point of this story is that the first week of college is difficult for pretty much every freshman out there. Though it may not be as bad as my story, or it may even be worse. Chances are though, it won’t be that bad. You just have to get through the first week. I promise you that things will get better. You will get used to your classes and you won’t get lost anymore around campus. You will find people to eat with and people you will become great friends with.
I am just over a month in to college now and it is pretty great. I have made so many great friends and I seriously love all the people on my hall. I came out of my shell and was just me. It turned out pretty great. I love my classes and just the campus in general. Don’t get discouraged if your first week isn’t going as good as you thought it would. It will get better. You just got to keep trying your best, and you will experience college in the fantastic way that I do now. And don’t forget to be yourself!
