I have been an avid Gilmore Girls fan since the show originally aired. My sisters are I fell in love with Lorelei, Rory, Luke, Sookie, Paris, and all of the character from the crazy town of Stars Hollow. With that being said, or excitement for the new Netflix revival Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life was immeasurable. I looked forward to it since the day it was announced. Crossed days off my calendar, set reminders on my phone, and watched the trailer about 1,000 times.
Then the day finally came. The four part series premiered, and I could not have been more disappointed. Here's why.
*Spoilers Ahead*
1. Luke and Lorelei Weren't Married...
Seriously?! the defining, epic love story throughout the whole show and they didn't get hitched for 10 years?? Yes, When we left them in 2006, Lorelei just got a divorce from Christopher and Luke just got custody of April, but the series finale they kiss and everyone knows what that means! They were going to make it work! Now I'm not saying that people who live together that aren't married aren't partners or don't have a serious relationship, but ever GG fan knows that Lorelei wanted to marry Luke! They planned a whole wedding (JUNE 3RD)! It was so disappointing to find out that after nearly 10 years, they just now tied the knot.
2. April is a mess??
Can we talk about his for a second? April, the smart, factual, well put together girl that did her own DNA test to find out that Luke was her father is spending her time smoking weed (only that one time *eye roll*), running off with her friend to Germany, AND making Luke pay for it? Does not sound like the road any of us wanted or expected for April.
3. Rory is Logan's side chick?
What Happened to you, Rory Gilmore? In the series Finale, Logan proposes to Rory and she turns him down because she wanted to put her career before his. Totally fair. But 10 years later and all of a sudden she's okay with not only asking for his fathers help in the paper business, but being the girl that he cheats on his new fiancee with?? When she finally gets some sense and calls off the arrangement, Logan does what Logan does best and magically sweeps her off of her feet and then all of a sudden, everything is magically okay again. I didn't realize the show took us back to 2005?
4. The Terrible Musical Number
Did they run out of ideas? Or did Amy simply lose a bet to Sutton Foster and was forced to give her a 30 minute scene in "Summer"? What. A. Waste.
5. Paris and Doyle are over?
I have to admit, finding out that Paris didn't become a lawyer or a surgeon was a tad heart breaking. But, she was still in the medical field, acting just like Paris should, and she seemed happy. Until the moment she says that her and Doyle are getting divorced because he wants to be a screenwriter. 2 kids, a 12 year relationship, and all we really get to see is them arguing over if the maid should go up the stairs? Terrible.
6. All of the Cameos
Dean, Sookie, "Digger", Mitchum, Mr. Kim, etc. all for the very brief appearances made the show seem so unreal. Yes, it was nice to see all of these characters again, but give me more of give me nothing.
7. Rory's Pregnancy
She's 32. She's not "following in her mothers footsteps" just because she's going to have a baby unmarried. What upsets me is the father situation. If it's Logan's, then it's an endless amount of possibilities, none of which will be good for her. If he wasn't going to leave his fiancee before baby, it's not going to go well for Rory after baby. Logan is Rory's Christopher and Jess is her Luke. However, if it's the one night stand she had that fathered her child, at least she'd be able to fully go alone without the complications of Logan and his family. ( The baby is most likely Logans. The creator did several interviews saying that the "last four words" were always going to be the same thing. Who was the one person that could have fathered Rory's baby back in 2006? That's right, Logan. Not to mention the awkward talk she had with her father about if he regretted letting Lorelei raise her alone...)
8. "The Gilmore Girls"
The corniest part of the whole revival. A book about her and her mother. An endless amount of eye rolls.
All in all, the revival was disappointing. Characters went backwards instead of forwards. I didn't expect for everyone's life to magically be perfect, but really? If I could go back in time and unwatch, I would.
