GoPro's newly announced Karma system is an adventure videographer's dream. For years, I've lamented the shaky, uneven footage captured on my reliable HERO3+ Black Edition. I love every part of the GoPro ecosystem, but the more I practiced my video and editing skills, the more I wished for the smooth and cinematic look only professionals could achieve.
Not anymore, thanks to Karma.
Karma is an ultraportable drone and stabilizer system that works with the already expansive GoPro family of cameras and mounts. The Karma stabilizer can be removed and hooked into the Karma Grip, which provides cinematic stabilization on the go.
Karma goes on sale Oct. 23 for $799. The drone is compatible with the newly announced HERO5 Black, HERO5 Session (coming Spring 2017), as well as the HERO4 Black and Sliver models. All the system components are available separate for purchase, from extra batteries and rotors to the carry-all backpack, controller and Karma Grip.
GoPro is the great equalizer when it comes to giving everyone the opportunity to capture the most beautiful and most exciting parts of his or her life. It lowered the barrier to entry for underwater and adventure videography.
With Karma, the GoPro story continues. If you haven't seen drone footage, check out Vimeo and YouTube for a brand new perspective on the world around us. Just like other amateur videographers that can't wait to get their hands on this system, here are # things I can't wait to film with Karma:
My hometown:
Doesn't the hustle and bustle of everyday life seem so peaceful from above? There's nothing like a change in perspective.
Sunrise at the beach:
One of the best parts about living on the east coast: the sunrise over the Atlantic. #Livewhereyouvacation is real and it's a blessing, but to catch a sunrise time-lapse, in the air, over the ocean- I can't believe it's a reality.
A day out on the boat:
If you've ever watched Sunday morning fishing shows, some of the coolest shots come from a secondary boat, plane or helicopter following the fisherman out on their trip. Now you don't need them, just a drone.
My university:
There's nothing more beautiful than a college campus in the fall. Your school might have some hidden secrets visible only from the sky. It's like a treasure hunt, minus Nicholas Cage.
Time on the reef:
Sure, underwater video is cool, but what above the view from above? For anyone who has spent time in the Florida Keys, you know the reefs look just as cool from above as they do below. Capturing video of people snorkeling, hanging out on the boat or exploring the lighthouse is at the top of my drone must do's.
A road trip with friends:
Scale is so important when it comes to creating perspective in video. The basics of filmography state that you need a wide, or even extra wide shot to build the scene. What better way to start a video chronicling a road trip vlog that an extra wide shot of you and your best friends setting off on the highway on your adventure together.
Are you an amatuer videographer looking forward to Karma? Do you already have a drone you love? What videos are you looking forward to creating? Let me know on Twitter!
