I don't just mean the newest film, I mean any of the entire capitalist empire that is "Star Wars." I know what you're probably thinking, "Everyone has seen 'Star Wars,' right?"
Nope. There are a few of us out hanging out here in the galaxy. Nerds and non-nerds alike. I still think I'm a pretty big nerd and I don't feel bad for not seeing these popular movies; I'm totally on board with all things "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings." I've just never really seen "Star Wars."
1. Pretending to understand when someone makes an obscure reference to the franchise.
Oh yeah, I totally know exactly what you're talking about! *nervous laughter*
2. The looks of shock and disdain you receive if, God forbid, someone finds out you haven't seen "Star Wars."
"What? You haven't seen 'Star Wars'?!"
No, I haven't, but it's going to be okay.
3. Trying to name the basic characters.
Ah yes, the little green guy is Yoda and then there's the Dalek – I mean R2D2 and that golden robot guy.
4. Seeing spoiler alerts for the new films.
(I wouldcare if it was "Star Trek," though.)
Oh, no! Don't spoil it for me! It's not like the biggest plot twist in cinematic history has essentially become general knowledge at this point.
Perhaps one day we'll see the light – and the films – and crossover. Until then, we persevere, positioned on the dark side of pop culture comprehension.
May the force (whatever that means) be with you, my friends.
