Being a camp counselor is one of the most rewarding summer jobs a teen could have. Every day is spent out in the sun helping children have a fun and memorable summer. As every counselor knows, some days can be a struggle but in the end it’s a job we would never trade for any other. As a camp counselor of two years, here is how I would describe the everyday life of a counselor.
1. Shedding a tear when the alarm goes off at 7 a.m.
Working as a camp counselor forces me to wake up earlier than I did during the school year.
2. An everyday wardrobe that consists of nothing but counselor shirts and athletic shorts
Luckily there is no need to dress your best to be a camp counselor (which would be impossible while waking up at 7 a.m.). Simply wake up, throw on your comfortable everyday attire, and be on your way.
3. Terrible tan lines
Nothing is better than the tee-shirt, shorts, and flip flop tan.
4. Feeling as if it's socially acceptable to play duck duck goose and kickball again
Participating in the activities with your campers allows you to feel like a child all over again.
5. Reminding your campers to reapply sunscreen every hour
Over applying does not exist.
6. Being told that you're their favorite counselor
Happiness is hearing that your campers actually like you. I love knowing that years down the road they will look back on our time at camp and think of me as a cool counselor.
7. Being super cautious of every allergy of every camper
The last thing you want is for one of your campers to have an allergic reaction.
8. Taking roll and counting heads every 15 minutes
Every counselor has that one camper that loves to wander off.
9. Getting close with a specific camper and then they break the news that it’s their last week at camp
Heart shattering.
10. Coming home every day needing the longest nap of your life
You’re conflicted when you come home because you are sweaty, hungry, and tired but don’t know which issue to take care of first.
