Spoiler alert: Spoilers for the entire run of "How I Met Your Mother" ahead.
9. Season 9 — Last Forever
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! First, Barney and Robin get married, and then divorced? No, I did not just watch an entire season of their wedding to see them get divorced. Second, Ted finally finds someone perfect for him in every single way, and SHE GETS KILLED OFF. An entire series dedicated to this woman, and I have to watch her slow demise. Not only did her boyfriend die, she had to go too. Last, Ted goes back to Robin?! Bro, that ended like two seasons ago! Ugh, at least Marshall and Lily are still happy and together. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, if you're reading this, that finale was horrific and not worth the tears I shed.
8. Season 1 — Come On
I'm gonna admit this right now, Ted and Robin are a terrible couple and should have never started or ended together. They were two completely different people who wanted different things. This finale sucked because not only did Ted and Robin get together, Lily WALKED OUT on her engagement with Marshall because she didn't think she could follow her dreams and also be with him. Really, Lily?! The only reason this episode didn't rank last is because everything ends up perfect between Marshall and Lily AKA world's greatest couple.
7. Season 7 — The Magician's Code
Ahh Victoria, I'm torn on my feelings for her in this finale. For one, she's ditching her wedding and leaving someone at the altar, someone who ends up doing the same thing, but that is beside the point. Ted really disappoints me because he, having been left at the altar, helps Victoria to cause someone else to feel that pain, which is horrible. On the other hand, it's Victoria, probably the only girl, besides The Mother, worthy of Ted's love. Also important, Barney proposes to Quinn, a person he hasn't been with for very long, and someone I did not particularly enjoy.
6. Season 5 — Doppelgangers
This finale is also quite the bummer, besides the fact that Ted dyed his hair blonde and earned some well-deserved insults. Robin turns down a job which Don then takes, ending things with them. Of course, Ted and Robin are about to hook up, but fortunately, they do not. As for Lily and Marshall, they see Barney's doppelganger, that is, Barney dresses up and pretends, which is actually sort of cute because he wants them to have a child. Overall, not a fan of either storyline and nothing big happened or was revealed.
5. Season 3 — Miracles
This episode just kind of made me sad. Ted and Barney both almost died, Ted tried to break up with Stella and ended up getting engaged to her instead. I liked Stella, but not enough for Ted to marry her, so that kind of made me feel nothing. We knew she wasn't the Mother so Craig and Carter just kind of wasted their time with her. Nothing too important happened with Lily, Marshall and Robin, so this finale is only okay in comparison with the others.
4. Season 8 — Something New
The Mother has been revealed! The moment you have been waiting for for 8 years! The only reason this finale ranks this high. But of course, this episode comes with a lot of heartbreak. Ted is moving to Chicago, Marshall accepts a judgeship even though he and Lily are moving to Rome, and of course, Craig and Carter make you wait until the next season to actually meet the Mother. Typical.
3. Season 4 — The Leap
Robin and Barney finally get together! Woohoo! Unfortunately for Ted, this wasn't the greatest end of an era but, he did do the typical Ted thing of turning his "leap" into a metaphor for getting away from all that had happened to him. Not a very eventful finale, besides Barney and Robin, but nothing sad or tragic happened.
2. Season 2 — Something Blue
After all the drama in season two, Marshall and Lily are finally a married couple! More importantly, Ted and Robin are over! This finale was beautiful and couldn't have been any better! The only reason it wasn't first was because the season six finale gave me more feels than when Jason Mesnick broke up with Melissa for Molly on live television on "The Bachelor."
1. Season 6 — Challenge Accepted
Finally! Ted ditched Zoey! His dream of designing a building on the New York City skyline is coming true! The guys are all bros again! MARSHALL AND LILY ARE HAVING A BABY! Finally, after trying for an entire season, they get the one thing they have been waiting for! Plus, it looks like Barney is going to get a second chance with Nora! Of course they don't work out but at that point in the series, it was a pretty good ending note. This is my personal favorite because the entire gang ended with something positive, or at least nothing negative, going on in their lives, and we get a little sneak peak into their future, and the future of the show, at the very end of the episode.
