Since you have come to college have you ever felt like you are completely behind in life? Have you ever had the feeling that everyone around you has his or her life together and you find yourself playing catch up?
Some people have an idea of what they want to do at a young age, but I was not one of these people. I had so many interests that it was hard for me to focus on one thing, and my indecisiveness was no help. I talked to my mom and she told me something that has stuck with me ever since, and I hope this is helpful for all those who are in the same position. She said, “No one should have to determine what they want to do with their entire life at the age of 18, that is just too young.” Then she continued to tell me that when hunting for a job out of college, most people are going to focus on the fact that you have a degree, rather than what that degree is in. I personally have changed my major quite a few times in my college career and because of this, I have felt like I am not as far along as my peers. However, my mom’s advice made me realize that finding something that I enjoy doing is far more important that what looks good on a resume.
The typical age range of college students is about 17-23. That is so young. You have a lifetime ahead of you to figure out what you want to do so there is no rush to make a decision that you might end up regretting. If you have an idea of what you want to do, run with it, but if you don’t, explore your options and take your time doing so. College is supposed to be a time to figure things out on your own, so have some confidence in yourself and trust your instincts. It is so easy to get caught up in the chaos that college has to offer and to compare yourself to others that have a grip on their future. You are completely different than the girl who is living down the hall from you who is double majoring and is involved in a handful of campus organizations. Find what it is that makes you happy and don’t compare your status to others.
From my college experience so far, I have had a few bumps in the road but I would not change anything about what has happened because it taught me a lot and that is the purpose of college. I am here to get an education that will lead me to a job that I enjoy and to meet some great people along the way. So for all those who are on the same page, I encourage you to get involved in something you are interested in on and find a major that makes you happy. Enjoy the four years of college you are given and make the most of them.
