Urbanite XVIII.2 rolled through The Canopy Club in Urbana for the third semester in a row on Dec. 5. Sponsored by Red Bull, Marriott and others, this dance show brought acts from all over the world. This event has been brought down to Champaign for this past year and a half by the company Power n Soul, an entertainment company spreading cultural awareness through a good time and Dance 2XS, a Champaign-based dance troupe.
The headliner was Dumbontess, a bicoastal DJ and dance duo. The married couple showed off their stuff with their EDM and dance skills, respectively.
Decidedly the highlight of the night, aside from some bomb vodka Red Bulls, was the dance team from Mexico City, 2XS Mexico. Their piece was based on the summer blockbuster, "Mad Max: Fury Road," and included food dye, fake blood, lasers and insane costumes. Other acts included UIUC’s own 2XS UIUC, Fizaa and others, along with acts from Purdue, the University of Michigan, Illinois State, Chicago and Detroit.
The event itself was a blast with a ton of energy and something you don’t often see in Champaign-Urbana and continued into Sunday with a Dance Workshop. Attendees could learn to dance almost as well as the performers from the night before.
If you missed this semester’s Urbanite, you definitely missed out, but make sure to check out last year’s promo video and keep an ear out for the next time this event comes to town.
