The Essential Makeup Buying Guide
PEXELS

For those that know me personally or have seen my insane Ulta, Sephora, and Sally's hauls on my Snapchat, you know I have a serious obsession with makeup and skincare. Makeup in college is hard though, as time, motivation, and funds are more limited than usual. So, I thought I would share my favorite products and tips that make dealing with makeup and skincare a breeze. All of these products are available at Ulta or Sephora, and yes, I've tried them all.

For Your Skin

1. WASH YOUR FACE!

Use a face wash that is specialized for your skin type. You don't want to use a drying cleanser for already dry skin, same for oily. Use one that is moisturizing if you have dry skin, or for oil reduction if you have oily skin.

Payton's recommendation: The best gentle cleanser for all skin types is Origin's Checks & Balances ($12-22)

2. WATCH YOUR MASKS

I love a good face mask as much as the next girl, but you have to be very careful with what you put on your face and let seep into your pores. For example, I ordered one of those black masks that are going viral and had an awful reaction- it also didn't work! Take note of what the mask is made of and what it's supposed to do. Remember masks are meant as problem solvers, so don't overwhelm your skin! A mask two-three times a week is plenty.

Payton's recommendation:

To clear pores/acne: Origins Clear Improvement ($17-26), Origins Out of Trouble ($26), GLAMGLOW SUPERMUD ($69)

For oily skin: Origins GinZing ($26), ESTEE LAUDER Nighwear Plus 3-Minute Detox Mask ($46)

For dry skin: Origins Drink Up Intensive ($17-26), NO7 Beautiful Skin Hydration Mask ($16.99), AHAVA Purifying Mud Mask ($33)

3. EXFOLIATE!!!

Your pores are going to be home to some nasty junk if you aren't cleaning your face regularly, and this includes removing the dead skin. If you have dry skin like myself, exfoliating needs to happen 3-4 times a week, whereas those with oily skin can stick to 2 times a week. Overexfoliating can cause problems too, so make sure you keep track of how your skin is reacting and adjust accordingly. Everyone is different!

Payton's recommendation: OLE HENRIKSEN Walnut Scrub ($28), Philosophy The Microdelivery Exfoliating Wash ($28-42), Origins Modern Friction ($20-39.50)

4. Moisturize

This is THE MOST IMPORTANT!!! Keep your skin healthy and hydrated constantly. This means using a quality moisturizer and drinking lots of water!

Payton's recommendation: IT COSMETICS Confidence in a Cream ($48), CLINIQUE Dramatically Different Gel ($14.50-27), Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream ($28.99), Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer ($16.79), Julep What Your Face Needs Milk ($38), you can also use the classic jojoba oil or coconut oil from any drug store or market.

Makeup

1. Primers, Foundation, Concealers

Every makeup routine starts with these basics. You should always make sure your foundation and concealer matches your skin tone. You can have this done for you at any Sephora location. Your primer and foundation should be appropriate for your skin type. I always apply primer with my hands, foundation with a beauty blender, and concealer with a concealer brush.

Payton's favorites:

Primer: Bare Minerals Prime Time ($25), Benefit POREfessional ($31), Smashbox Photo Finish ($36)

Foundation: Kat Von D Lock-It ($35- best for oily skin. You can add jojoba oil to your foundation if you have dry skin), TOO FACED Born This Way ($39), URBAN DECAY Naked Skin Weightless ($40), BAREMINERALS bareSkin Pure Brightening ($18-29.50)

Concealer: IT Cosmetics CC ($38), IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye ($24), Kat Von D Lock-It Concealer, TARTE Maracuja Creaseless Concealer ($25)

2. Eyeliner & Mascara

I like to do both natural and dramatic looks, so my favorite eye products have to be versatile in that. I left out bronzers, blushes, highlighters, contour, and eyeshadows because those are all up to personal preference in color choice. Mascaras and eyeliners however, do have a scale of what works for dramatic and natural, and what simply falls flat.

Payton's favorites:

Eyeliner: Kat Von D Tattoo liner ($20), Clinique Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen ($19.50), NYX Noir Skinny Black Liner ($5.99)

Mascara: TOO FACED Better Than Sex ($12-23), Benefit They're Real! ($12-24), LOREAL Voluminous Feline ($8.99)

3. Lips

If you know me, when it comes to lip colors, I have a whole separate box because I have so many....and I blame ColourPop. I absolutely love matte formulas that stay put without feeling gross and dry. Pro tip: always use chapstick before applying your lip color and use a lip scrub daily (especially in the winter)! LUSH even has sugar lip scrubs you can eat. Yes, you read that right. You can eat them.

Payton's favorites:

HUDA Liquid Matte in Medusa ($20); Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Bow N Arrow, Sanctuary, Hawkwind, Damned ($20); Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Stripped, Trust Issues ($20)

Colourpop (yes, a whole line just for this, because 99% of my lip colors have come from them!!! They are $6 at the highest): (Mattes) Wild Nothing, Speed Dial, Beeper, Instigator, LAX; (Satins) Screenshot, Baracuda, Dopey; (Lippie Stix) Cookie, Parker, Lady, Party Foul, Hype Girl, Ziggie; (Lip liners- yes I use these as my lip color on lazy days!) Skimpy, Brink, Oh Snap; (Metallics- I LOVE these! If you're going for bold, look no further!) Man Eater, Salt, Zebra, 3-Way

Skin care and makeup varies so greatly that it's hard to know if what you're buying really is all it cracks up to be. These are all my personal tried and true favorites. While everyone is different, I hope you find the same love in them that I do!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
