We all know Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, Yik Yak, and so on and so forth. They're our favorite social media sites, especially for millennials. While we express our daily thoughts, feelings, and activities via a status, a 140 character, tweet, a picture or video, I can't help but feel that something is missing. I've always treated social media as a popularity contest. How many likes can I get? Does he/she have more? What about comments or favorites?
Then I realized something-- it's my profile, it's about me, the REAL me. I shouldn't be catering to other people just so they think a certain way about me. I should post what I want, when I want, and that's that. If you don't like it, the unfollow/unfriend button is right there. That why I really, really love Tumblr. For those that don't know what Tumblr is, I'd say it's a mixture between Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
Tumblr is considered a blog site. You can literally create anything you want. A new persona, upload your own artwork, find funny or comedic posts, find a picture that perfectly describes your mood, and the list goes on. I created a Tumblr account only three days ago. I created a blog where I just reblog or post pictures that I find cool, interesting, captivating, important, or weird. It's fun and I can show my true colors.
Most people think I'm a quiet, somewhat nerdy, field hockey obsessed writer. While that isn't entirely wrong, I yearn for a different side of me to show. Since I cannot pull off winged eyeliner, maroon lipstick, or a silver hoop nose ring and think smoking is foul and disgusting, I need to find a different way to show off the part of me that loves the dark, grunge-y, hipster lifestyle. You could say there's a brooding teenager that just wants to yell that nobody understands me behind my little chubby cherubic face. Tumblr is my outlet to express myself in a way I hadn't previously felt I could, it's anonymous so it's all for personal satisfaction. I'm obsessed with the blogs I've found and love scrolling through my feed for new pictures to catch my eye. It's relaxing and since I am crap at drawing, photography, or anything else slightly artsy, reblogging other people's wildly talented photos will have to suffice.
Tumblr gives you a place of complete freedom and anonymity (if you so choose). It's perfect for anyone and everyone to be whoever they wish to be or already are. Self-expression is important for personal satisfaction for your daily life and for a healthy and happy mind. I personally think my mental health has benefited from making my Tumblr account and I think everyone should give it a chance. Sign up is easy: all you need is an email and to create a password!
