I grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania. Often when I discuss this place with people they wonder what the appeal is with snow and cold lasting for so many months. For others who grew up here, they want to escape it, believing Erie has nothing to do. Like all cities, it has its drawbacks, however for being fairly small in comparison to other places, it is packed full of sites that other big cities may lack. So, before we Erieites complain about the lack of entertainment in Erie consider the sights we do have:
1. Waldameer Park
Erie, although small, has its own amusement park. Starting out in 1896, it is the tenth oldest amusement park in the United States. Beginning as just a picnic pavilion, this park by the lake now offers several roller coaster and thrill rides as well as the old classics like Pirate's Cove and the Whacky Shack. As a child, I remember how excited I would get with the prospect of going to the park, and now I still appreciate that the lines are never too long like at other parks and it is easy to walk around without getting lost in seas of people. It also doesn't hurt that the Ravine Flyer coaster has an amazing lake view.
2. Erie Art Museum
With the new renovations that took place several years ago at this museum, the museum's updated exhibits and look make it a cool and interesting place to visit. The main exhibits change frequently, with previous one's including portraits of dogs, and comic book themes. Walking around the exhibits, you see the talent of Erie artists, as many of the art pieces feature images of the Erie area. The old art museum is still available to look through as well, giving the museum a classic feel along with the new.
3. Erie Zoo
My personal favorite, the Erie Zoo, has been a huge part of my life. It remained a constant as I went there as a child to now working there as a teen and young adult. Not all big cities have a zoo, and yet our small town does. This zoo is one of the best for big cats and even though it is not large it contains animal favorites like orangutans, tigers, and a giraffe. The atmosphere of the zoo, along with the charm of its exhibits and train make it the perfect place to take a family to.
4. Millcreek Mall
Though this is technically outside of the city, it is practically right there and includes many new stores and restaurants that big cities have. The size of the mall continues to grow with new stores entering it each month. I've watched it change from year to year, and feel lucky that I don't have to travel to a different city to go to my favorite stores. Also a plus of our mall and surrounding Pennsylvania malls is the lack of clothing tax, which makes shopping a little more affordable.
5. Bicentennial Tower
This tower sits right on the bay in Lake Erie, and offers great city and lake views. It was built to celebrate Erie's bicentennial. If you climb to the top of the tower you can see a view of both the city and the lake showing the beauty of Erie from up above.
6. Warner Theatre
I have memories of attending the Nutcracker during the holidays as well as numerous other shows in this classic theatre. The art deco-style building with its grand interior made me feel like I was attending world class productions right within my town. The Warner's sign is a standing monument in downtown Erie, and offers musicians, comedians, musicals, and plays frequently throughout the year.
7. Presque Isle State Park
Presque Isle is by far the best part of Erie. From its various beaches to the iconic Sara's restaurant on the park this place is what makes Erie special. We, unlike many places have our own lake and peninsula, with beaches that offer sand and enjoyment. The state park has trails going around the peninsula where people can roller blade and bike or simply walk. It provides scenic outdoor recreation for all of us Erieites and should be considered a fun tourist destination for those who want the feel of a beach without the costs of going to the ocean.
These seven sights, to name only a few, make Erie a place that deserves a visit. And, For us Erieites maybe a chance to truly appreciate our city.
