Showtunes all share a similarity with any other music genre in the way that there are sad, happy, goofy, and even angry songs within. Although it's a different style than most of the music people are used to, it really can be relatable to life, just like pop, rock, and rap. However, out of all the music I've listened to, I've found that musical theatre is typically more effective when it comes to empowerment in songs. Take a look at some of the ones that have the ability to make you feel good, capable and ready for life!
1. "Defying Gravity" from "Wicked"
This is the ultimate power song of basically all Broadway songs. Listen to this, and you'll literally feel like you can defy gravity. Cheesy, yes, but Idina Menzel has a way of making anything seem possible. This song is all about being able to do all that you've ever wished for, regardless of the consequences, because your happiness means more than any inconveniences you may encounter.
2. "Don't Rain On My Parade" from "Funny Girl"
This one is my personal favorite. Barbra Streisand totally proves the point that nobody should be able to ruin your fun, success or happiness. From the musical "Funny Girl," this song is important because it reminds us that sometimes the intentions of others aren't helpful, and we have a right to reject them.
3. "Astonishing" from "Little Women"
The song "Astonishing" from "Little Women" is spot-on when sending the message that you can go anywhere you want to go, do anything you want to do and be anything you want to be. Dreams are honestly so important, and once you hear this tune, you'll never forget it.
4. "I Can Do That" from "A Chorus Line"
Inspiring and uplifting, "I Can Do That" from "A Chorus Line" can absolutely be a mood changer. The song describes a guy who's discovered his passion and now is practically unstoppable with what he can achieve. It shows that putting in effort toward our goals can and will allow for unlimited success.
5. "Good Morning Baltimore" from "Hairspray"
This song will have you jumping out of bed in the morning ready and eager to conquer the day, hence the name, "Good Morning Baltimore." This lighthearted melody makes things seem not-so-hard in daily life when you're reminded of all the great things in the world!
6. "La Vie Boheme" from "Rent"
This is a great song because it positively expresses the individuality of everybody. The musical "Rent" includes many characters of great diversity, including those of different sexualities and health/financial statuses. "La Vie Boheme" celebrates the ability of those even with great struggles to be great and do great things.
7. "Before the Parade Passes By" from "Hello, Dolly!"
If you need inspiration to overcome a difficult time or event, this is the song for you. "Before the Parade Passes By" talks about the importance of becoming yourself again. Being happy as you once were is the inspiration for this song, and as old as it is, it makes a good point of self-strength being a necessity.
