PSA: Safe Sex Isn't Just Physical Protection, It's Emotional Security, Too

I know the first thing that pops into your mind when I say "safe sex" is condoms, but emotionally safe sex is just as important. You want to feel comfortable and secure in any and every intimate setting.

I promise I'm not coming after casual sex. I have no reason to, but I am coming after unsafe, unprotected sex because when you are stripping it all down, you're more likely to get hurt.

Safe sex is knowing that your partner won't intentionally hurt you.

Whether that be emotionally, physically, verbally, sexually. You both understand that "friends with benefits" means, just friends. You both understand that a monogamous relationship means no fuck buddies on the side. You both understand that sexual chocking and playing is free game, but don't leave marks.

You do not have to be in love to have sex. You do not have to be in a relationship to have sex. It can be a no strings attached kinda deal. There are no rules, well, except for protection. And consent. OK, maybe there are some rules.

But, leave that as it be, feeling emotionally secure is a gigantic piece of our self-esteem. Sex can solely be physical. Just your bumping bodies, but, no matter how hard you try, you can't ignore your heart.

Both partners should be on the same page.

If one lover wants a relationship and the other is just there for sex, a broken heart is bound to happen.

Do you trust your partner?

That can mean something different for everyone, but answering this question will help you ensure you're having safe sex. And, when you have safe sex, then you can finally let go. Your mind, body, soul, all that jazz is at peace.

If there is no trust, honesty, communication, then you aren't going to have good sex.

Sure, maybe you had an orgasm, but there could be some anxiety, fear, disappointment, betrayal that follows you when you realize your partner wasn't faithful. Even if you're at a party and hooking up with someone, make sure to understand the circumstances: did they sleep with anyone else that night? Are you sleeping with anyone else? What's to come out of this? Be happy with your answers before doing something you'll regret.

By all means, go out there and have fun. Own your body! But, protect it, too.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
