Embracing Change

"God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference."

Embracing Change
Alanon

Imagine what your life would be like without change. It’s impossible to imagine, isn’t it? Life is constantly surrounded by change. Some of that change is scary, some of that change is hard, and some of that change seems impossible. Regardless of how change feels when it is happening, it can be so worth it and rewarding in the end. Like others, I have fallen through the cracks of life where I want to punch change in the face because it can be so scary and hard; however, it is time that I open my eyes and start embracing change because without change, life wouldn’t be worth living.

Accept the things I cannot change. Accepting change sometimes seems impossible, but it is the first step towards embracing change. So much changes throughout the course of life. People change, jobs change, houses change, age changes, and so much more. At times it is hard to accept the change that is happening in life, but once change is accepted, we can focus on living life. Rather than getting angry and complaining about change, we need to accept it, decide how to deal with it, and embrace it. What other choice is there?

Change the things I can. There are some events in life that cannot be changed such as aging and death. However, there are many other life events that can be changed if one has the power to change them. It is up to us to decide if we want to take charge and change the things in life that we are unhappy with. Unhappy with your grades in school? That can be changed. Get a tutor, talk to your teachers, and improve your study habits. Unhappy with your job? That can be changed. Search for a new job, talk to your boss, and take charge to put an end to your unhappiness. Ultimately, we control our own lives, so it is up to you to change the things you can.

Know the difference.Recognizing the difference between what has the power to be changed and what doesn’t can be a very difficult task. You may think that buying anti-aging products will change the fact that you are aging, but it won’t. However, you may be able to change that fact that you look like you’re aging by purchasing some makeup to cover up the wrinkles. Regardless of the change, it is crucial that you understand the difference between what can be changed and what cannot be changed.

Since it is impossible to imagine life without change, we must work to embrace change by accepting what cannot be changed, changing what can be changed, and knowing the difference between the two. The journey towards embracing change is probably going to be scary and hard, and sometimes it will seem impossible, but in the end, it is going to make life worth living. Always remember the Serenity Prayer.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
