The acai bowl is a new trend that has recently started receiving buzz all over the nation. These bright and colorful creations make healthy eating look appetizing and delicious. The superfood originated in Brazil and then shortly became a staple in tropical islands like Hawaii, where it then moved to California and has since swept across the west coast. It won’t be long before the east coast is selling these tasty yet healthy bowls in stores and shops all over.
So, what’s the buzz?
First of all, acai is extremely good for you. It's a “superfruit” which means it is full of vitamins and antioxidants that protect you from sickness and provide you with energy. Acai bowls are also low in calories, full of fruit and protein, and best of all, they are extremely filling.
What exactly is an acai bowl?
Acai, pronounced ah-sigh-ee, is a small blackish-purplish berry produced from palm trees native to South America. These berries are ground up into a paste or powder which is used to make a smoothie-like substance.
Because bowl bars have yet to reach many parts of the states, young adults are making their own acai bowls at home. They are super easy to create and can be made with almost anything. The acai puree or powder can be ordered online or purchased at Whole Foods. Then, all you need is frozen fruit and your milk of choice; almond, coconut, or soy. Blend your ingredients together and add in different fruits, nuts, seeds, or grains to the top to create an array of flavors and colors.
Below I’ve included a few variations that I’ve created from ingredients I have found lying around the kitchen. The best part is you can mix and match these five bowls or add in and substitute your own ingredients. What better time to embrace this new craze than summertime with fruits readily available and plenty of time on your hands to try something new. Acai bowls are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth and turn your otherwise boring breakfast into a work of art.
