Ever since we have been little children we are being told what to do. There are certain societal standards that we are expected to comply with and we usually do so without questioning it too much.
Whether it is our parents telling us we can't have sweets before dinner, our teachers telling us we have to do our homework, our coach letting us know that we can only play soccer if we put our shin guards on, we follow the rules and do what is expected of us.
But it's not just that.
Our lives are sometimes already laid out in front of us. We go to school and after graduating from there, we move on to college.
After college, it's usually getting a job before getting married, buying that house and having those kids. While there are some variations to this, it seems there is very little wiggle room in doing something else.
However, from time to time you hit a patch in your life where you actually don't know what you are going to do. While you might know what your plans for the upcoming weekend are, you don't really know how your life is going to look in two months time.
Sometimes there is beauty in not knowing what's going to happen. Not having a detailed plan for the next five years can sometimes be extremely liberating. Because that allows you to take it step by step.
You give yourself room to grow, make changes, adventure outside of your comfort zone, make small adjustments, or a complete redo if you feel it deem necessary.
Yes, it can be scary to not know what your future will hold in store for you. Especially, when you keep seeing everyone else having a plan, or heading in a certain direction. There will be a time when you know your direction and you will find a path that you want to follow for a while. Until then just embrace the unknown and let it be your guide.
Because if you look back in your life didn't the most incredible things happen when you least expected them or saw them coming? Life has this mysterious way of working out one way or the other. If we try to force it too much it won't happen anyways.
Next time you open up Facebook and see people seemingly having it all figured out, or talk to someone that is telling you about their great plans for the future, don't panic. Life is a crazy ride and not always knowing what is in store or where exactly you are heading can be the best thing to ever happen to you.
