First things first, summer in itself is absolutely righteous. There is nothing in comparison to being able to walk on the sidewalk without snow, or just throwing on a t-shirt and shorts, being mindless of having to layer up. Not to mention, the feeling of sun-kissed skin after a long day spent in the blazing heat. With all this extravaganza and more, it's clear to see I am an advocate for summer, completely and wholly. Consequently, I have come up with a small list of necessary activities to spend your summer the right way.
Beware: this advice is meant for those seeking adventure. If you are not prone to wild feats or you're a rather boring person, don't bother reading.
Go to the beach!
Of all the things you should do during the summer, venturing to the coast is a must. Don't like the beach? Sorry, I can't help you. Seriously though, this is the perfect location to lay down and allow the iridescent sun to caress your skin while your hair subtly bounces in the wind. Going for walks, playing volleyball or soccer, swimming in the ocean...all GREAT aspects of the beach, let alone summer. And after such a tiring day, you can get a treat at a local ice cream shop because those are always near. Plus, the beach is the perfect getaway for those in pursuit of adventure. Think of all the water sports: body-boarding, surfing (a personal favorite), paddle-boarding, and many more! Come on now, during the summer, it's imperative to take a trip to the beach.
Try a new sport!
The trend as college students is to be lazy during the summer. We have no responsibilities, no ties to anything or anyone. But rather than waste away the limited amount of days we have of heat, go out and try a new sport or hobby. Personally, I tried surfing and I fell head over heals with it. Just go to a local surf shop, or any place that offers something of interest, and try to take a lesson in whatever they offer. Surely, it doesn't have to be surfing. Don't like the water? That's fine...join a team or try new activities such as running or hiking. Regardless of what you choose, make sure you dive into it without hesitation, because you may realize you love it, and you might not. Either way, you'll know you tried.
Bridge Jump!
Of all activities I take part in during the summer, bridge jumping is one of my favorites. Find a local bridge that people jump off of (considering you don't want to pick the wrong one) and go for it. I love trying out new bridges during the summer because sticking to one bridge is too habitual. Anyhow, remember to commit yourself to the plunge though because if you hesitate right before the jump, you most likely will hate it and not get the gratifying experience I'm speaking of. In short, bridge jumping is a blast, but once more, you can step it up a notch by jumping off a tree into a body of water. I did so last summer and I can't even begin to describe the fun I had. But the adventure does not stop there, you can even cliff jump! Honestly, if you're an adventure seeker like me you will love doing this if you haven't already. Overall, keep in mind these activities really aren't safe. So be cautious about it and make sure you're aware of your surroundings.
Clubbing!
Alright, alright...this may sound lame, but I can guarantee it's not. As long as you have a passion for dancing and meeting new people, go to a club. They are so much fun, especially so in the summer because you get to dress up without the hassle of wearing a coat or freezing in the cold because you neglected to wear appropriate clothing. In summary, clubbing is a night activity for the summer that is must. If you don't like loud music and sweaty people (I mean why wouldn't you?) then go to a concert where you get the best of both worlds: preferred music and the type of crowd you'd associate with normally. Always bring friends and have a blast.
What better way to spend the summer than exploring places you've never been to? Plan a trip within reason and go. Take some friends and travel places you've never been to. Even if it's just a day adventure, it still counts. The great thing about these kinds of expeditions is that they can be saved for crappy, rainy days during the summer. So you don't have to waste a beautiful sunny day in a car.
All in all, the summer is by far my favorite season (if you couldn't tell). I have no complaints about being trapped in the heat, specifically when I am able to surf, run, club, etc. My biggest advice is to stay active during the few months of summer in New England because when they're over we have to brace ourselves for a brutal winter, filled with snow and bitter temperatures. So don't be lazy and veg out on the couch, that's such a winter thing to do. Go out, explore, make adventures, and meet summer's great expectations. There is so much this season has to offer! Neglecting all it has is not only boring, but foolish as well.
On that note, have a great winter. But better yet...have a splendid summer!
