During the G-20 summit Trump and Putin finally met one another and held a two hour meeting, and boy was it a doozy. During the summit, all of the world's leaders are on deck to discuss important issues like climate change, ISIS, or North Korea. This meeting between Trump and Putin was the blockbuster meeting of the entire summit for one particular reason: the Russian meddling in our 2016 election which resulted in Trump winning the Presidency. In Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he embarrassed the American people.
As of right now there are conflicting reports about what was said in this meeting. There were only six people in this meeting. Two translators, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and of course Trump and Putin. As soon as the meeting was over, Tillerson was telling the press that Trump pressed "on more than one occasion," about the interference in our election process. Lavrov told the press that Putin denied being a part of any interference and that Trump believed him. It is a shame when the American people can not believe a word that this administration says. You also can not believe anything that the Russian government says. Nothing in Russia gets done without the approval of Putin. Russia staged a full scale cyber war that even up until yesterday Trump was denying ever happening. If Trump didn't believe that Russia meddled in our election, why would he confront Putin about it?
Putin got exactly what he wanted out of this meeting. Trump was unprepared and totally not ready for this meeting. Everyone, including people in his own administration, was hoping Trump would confront Putin about the election. This has happened time and time again during the campaign and during Trump's presidency. He will claim to be a tough guy at rallies, and when the time comes to finally meet face to face, he chickens out. He may not have gotten the sanctions lifted yet, but he managed to make Trump look like a moron.
Since Trump was elected, Putin has criticized the American Intelligence community, American journalists, President Obama, and threatened to shoot down American planes flying in Syria. He gets a two hour meeting with our President. Meanwhile German Chancellor Angela Merkel can't even get a handshake. It's very frightening to see our President bowing to "strong men" like Putin while he lectures our allies on how much they should pay to be a member of NATO. Because of this, the American people should be embarrassed. Russia is not our friendno matter how many flattering things he may say about Trump. There is a reason why Putin use to be a spy for the KGB.
In closing, hopefully Trump will learn from this meeting not to trust Putin. I doubt it, but you never know. Meanwhile the Republican led Senate is going to try and sneak their Healthcare planthrough for a vote. Keep your eye on this as Mitch and Co. try to throw 32 million people off of insurance in order to give their billionaire friends a huge tax cut. Resist.
